Switzerland Jessica Janes Environmental Science Final Project Professor Maggio September 5th, 2012 Switzerland is a small densely populated country located in the heart of Europe and is best described by conveying an understanding of its geography, cultural, economic, political, and social environments. The Swiss are known for their fine chocolates and cheese, precision watches, efficient transportation, banking industry, and non-CO2 emitting energy sources. As one of the most prosperous countries in Europe, Switzerland is a driving force in the world economy and one of the greenest countries today. The Swiss are proud of the pristine beauty of their country filled with soaring mountain ranges, abundant glaciers, and vast biodiversity. A landlocked, mountainous country, Switzerland’s geographical location in central Europe has had important influence on its way of life. Bordered by France in the west, Austria and Liechtenstein in the east, Germany in the north, and Italy in the south, Switzerland represents many European cultures. Italian, German, French, and Romansh are the four different languages spoken by the 7.78 million people that call Switzerland their home (Federal Department of Foreign Affairs, 2012). The country’s central location is home to many foreigners, making up twenty two percent of the population (Federal Department of Foreign Affairs, 2012). The number of foreigners who have been naturalized significantly contributes to the number of Swiss citizens. Although there are more citizens, the population is not growing. Since 1972, fewer children have been born that are necessary for population growth. The average age is increasing, as people are living longer and having fewer children. Switzerland has the highest number of elderly people in the world, with 796 people aged 100 or more (Federal Department of Foreign Affairs, 2012).
