IOP Speech Topic: Describing the Relationship between Gerardo and Paulina Good afternoon teacher and my dear friends, my name is Abhishek Singh and I am from class IB Year 1A. I will be presenting a topic from the book “Death and the Maiden” by Ariel Dorfman and my topic is “Describing the Relationship between Gerardo and Paulina”. I will be explaining how their attitude and behaviour change respective of events and how it affects Paulina’s and Gerardo’s relationship. But first I would like to talk about Gerardo and Paulina. Gerardo and Paulina are husband and wife (obviously) and they are the main characters of the story alongside Roberto, but we won’t be talking about him here. Gerardo is a moralistic, honest and a justice-oriented man. Formerly a lawyer, he is promoted to a committee that investigates human rights violations during the military dictatorship. Throughout the story he tries to appease his wife while still obeying the law but is rather unsuccessful in doing as his objectives and ideals clash with those of Paulina’s. Hence, Gerardo lacks empathy and tries to explore things in an objective matter. He believes that reconciliation is the best way to end a problem and is an avid supporter of human rights, though his inability to understand Paulina’s pain and anger on a personal level is surprising, despite the nature of his work. Paulina is also a moral person but holds revenge that goes beyond her morality in the ways she wants to achieve them. She is a very intelligent and her extensive thought out plan against Roberto shows this. Though her actions seem questionable and she appears to be insane, however, she is very deliberate in her actions and is very composed. She only appears insane due the fact that she has been holding her pain and anger for 17 years and upon finding her captor, all that rage has finally exploded out of
