The Introduction usually consists of one paragraph where a general statement related to the subject is made and also the thesis statement is introduced. 2. What are some good examples of “hooks” in an essay? (list 2, 5pts.each) There are many different types of essay hooks that can be used to make someone interested into reading an essay. The most common types are quotation, anecdote, rhetorical question, interesting fact and simile or metaphor. We are going to list two examples: Interesting Fact (included in an essay regarding olive production in the region of Attica): According to Greek mythology, the olive tree was given to Athens by the goddess Athena, and Greece is not the world’s third leading producer of olives. It is thought that some trees planted in the 1200s are still producing olives. Quotation (included in an essay regarding olive production in the region of Attika): Pliny the Philosopher once said “Except the vine, there is no plant which bears a fruit of as great importance as the olive”. 3. In an essay, what is the first sentence of each supporting paragraph called? (5pts.) The first sentence of each supporting paragraph is called a topic sentence. A topic sentence is clearly related to the main idea of the whole essay. Not only the topic sentence is the first sentence of a paragraph, but, more importantly, it is the most general sentence in the paragraph. This means that there are not many details in the sentence, but the sentence introduces an overall idea that needs to be discussed later in the paragraph. 4.
