In every even-numbered paragraph, third person and first person is used and Calvin Jarrett is the narrator. Calvin is Conrad’s father who also plays a major part in the novel. Whilst discussing the issues which were found in the novel, James Maloney also used many forms of literary techniques which helped emphasize a situation or even a character. He used descriptive writing and even juxtaposition which really helped the reader to paint a picture in their minds about a situation or a character in the novel.
The next thing that qualifies this book as a classic is the fact that it uses effective, unique style appropriate to the purpose and content. In this book author Tim O’Brien use a style unique to this novel. His tone is appropriate for storytelling which is the main thing happening in this book. There is also different point of views from which the stories are told. Though O’Brien is the narrator his stories come from the views and experiences of others.
Each story was successful at indicating exactly what the author was trying to come to get across to the reader. If the roles were switched and “A Clean, Well-Lighted Place” was written in first person and “Battle Royal” was written in third person the interpretation of the stories would be completely opposite. For instance, by writing Hemmingway’s piece in first person you would have to give each character a name, a place, and a time rather than allowing the author to use his/her imagination. This would then put one character ahead of the others due to it would be narrated by one individual. In terms this could flip the whole tone of the novel whether it was depressing due to the old man’s mind, or vulgar and hostile from the younger waiter’s point of view.
