Holden feels sad every time he receives a present because he feels although he didn’t deserve it. For example, the ice skates his mother took the time to buy, and now he’s being kicked out. He feels like he let her down. Holden gives a fake name so he wouldn’t have to elaborate on his life to this woman.
His ex-friend Bennie Reid taught Paul that sometimes relationships ‘just happen’ even though Paul did not like the prospect of befriending Bennie largely because of his position in the social hierarchy, he still could not abandon Bennie and be left with nobody. The song is about how he is when he’s alone he thinks and his relationships never last and how he drinks to forget everything. This is very much accordant to Holden’s character in the sense that he is alone through most of the book and he is quite the alcoholic.
