How Does the Government Influence the Food Choices of Those Participating in the EBT Card Program? Introduction: Throughout this research the question that I will try to answer is how does government assistance influence the health choices of those participating in the EBT program? According to the website of the United States Department of Agriculture, Electronic Benefits Transfer also known, as EBT card, is an electronic system that allows state governments to provide financial benefits through a plastic debit card. The benefits provided through the EBT are sorted in two general categories, which are food and cash benefits (USDA, 2012). SNAP is expected to provide $69 billion in benefits to roughly 43 million people in 2011.9,10 By definition, SNAP is intended to help ‘‘low-income people and families buy the food they need for good health.’’(Shenkin 2010: 1562). Eat Smart New York (ESNY) is a free program which is given to all Food Stamps members and those who are eligible to receive Food Stamps. In this program nutrition educators help the participants to learn how to be in good physical health and hoe to eat healthy.
