Drug Profile Paper Robert Trejo PSY 425 8/30/2012 Aaron Karpman In today’s society, there is an uncontrolled force that is taking control of the mind and the body of people ranging from all ages. The use of illegal drugs and the use of controlled substances it at an all time rise. There are various drugs in the street ranging from Heroin to Marijuana, Cocaine to LSD. But those are not the only types of drugs that are being cycled and made easily accessible. Prescription drugs are another form of substance that is being used and abused partly because it has become very easy to obtain and use. The Physiological aspect is another factor of addiction a user goes through. In the textbook, Physiological addiction is “ a model of drug dependence based on the idea that the drug abuser continues the drug-taking behavior to avoid the consequences of physical withdrawal symptoms.” (F. Levinthal , 2012) It is very noticeable to see the physiological toll the body has when it is addicted to a certain type of drug. The body can experience chills and fevers, hypertension, seizures, anxiety and even more serious, chemical imbalances. Drug abuse permanently alters the chemistry of the brain causing chemical imbalances. They all fall under specific categories: Stimulants, Depressants, Narcotics, Hallucinogens, and Cannabinoids. Stimulants are drugs like Cocaine, Amphetamines, and PCP but the main stimulants are Cocaine and any Amphetamine like Crystal Meth. Depressants are drugs like Valium, Alcohol, and Barbiturates. Drugs like Opium, which is related to Heroin, Morphine, Codeine Oxycodone, and Vicodin are all considered as Narcotics. Hallucinogens are drugs such as LSD, Mescaline, DMT, MDMA and Ketamine. The last drug category is Cannabinoids. Cannabis has its own unique category because there is so much that falls under the Cannabis plant than just marijuana. Cannabinoids are “Any of several dozen active substances found in marijuana and in other cannabis products.” (F.
