Discuss the Significance of Chapters 5-9 in the Novel 'Im the King of the Castle'

I’m the King of the Castle is a novel set in a rural house called Warings. The novel features 4 main characters; the adults: Joseph Hooper and Helena Kingshaw and the children: Edmund Hooper and Charles Kingshaw. Charles Kingshaw is portrayed as a weak character whereas Edmund is portrayed as the stronger of the two. Edmund Hooper is constantly bullying Charles which eventually leads to Charles’ death. Most of the book of is told from the eyes of Charles Kingshaw. The writer, Susan Hill uses many different writing techniques to explore her dark themes. Her writing is often very straightforward and usually very descriptive. Chapter 5 begins when Mrs Kingshaw tells Charles that she shall be going up to London for the day. This immediately gives Kingshaw incentive to plan his escape. “He knew he would not have another chance like it” gives the reader the impression that Charles has been cunningly planning his escape for a long time and he has finally found his breakthrough. Although Mrs Kingshaw assures Charles that Mrs Boland will be looking after them, he does not see this as a potential threat to his escape. The reader feels that this escape attempt will be more successful than the previous attempt in chapter 3. In chapter 7, the conflict between the two boys deepens. Once they are in hangwood a strong storm starts brewing. At this point, the roles are reversed. Hooper is usually dominant in the relationship however he is terrified of the storm. Kingshaw can tell he is scared but, unlike Hooper, does not want to insult when he is already weak. Susan Hill writes “If he had been vindictive, this was his chance with Hooper. But he was not. He did not much care, one way or the other, so long as he was left alone.” Kingshaw erects a makeshift shelter and comforts Hooper as best as he can.
