They can be vitamins, minerals, herbs or other plants, and amino acids. Supplements can be taken in pill, liquid, capsule, or tablet form (google.com,n.d). Some benefits of taking dietary supplements are that they can provide nutrients when the body is lacking, or when certain health conditions cause you to develop a deficiency (nutrition.about.com, n.d.). Some supplements have been said to assist with helping to control blood glucose levels, but there is not specific information to support this (www.webmd.com, n.d.). Cinnamon may help improve blood glucose and lipid levels when a person has diabetes (nutrition.about.com, n.d.). If a person plans on using cinnamon, a brand with a quality seal should be chosen (nutrition.about.com, n.d.). Cinnamon supplements are classified as a food, not a drug. Unlike medications, supplement Dietary Supplements 3 makers do not have to prove their products are safe or effective. The FDA, however, can force a supplement from the market if it proves it is unsafe (nutrition.about.com, n.d.). Dietary supplements can be good for the body if there are substances lacking in the body. If a person has diseases, supplements can help control them. It is best to consult a doctor before taking supplements because they can interact with medications, causing bad reactions. There are limits on the amounts of supplements a person should consume, and should be followed according to packaging, or your doctor.
