Define the American Dream Many people put life and limb on the line to achieve their goals and strive for greatness. They “Dream as if [they’ll] live forever. Live as if [they'll] die today (James Dean).” No one can define greatness but people at their own personal levels. Everyone in this world strives for things that make them happy and give them a sense of accomplishment. Unfortunately, this feeling of happiness doesn’t last forever. “In the end, it's not the years in your life that count. It's the life in your years (Abraham Lincoln).” Life is a journey, and it is this journey or pursuit that is really the dream. As the Declaration of Independence states, “[everyone] is entitled to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.” The American…show more content…
Can the same be said for a dream? Humans have an imperfection of never being completely satisfied, “Success is getting what you want, happiness is wanting what you get (W.P. Kinsella),” we always seem to want more, and that’s just human nature. We strive for one goal, but once we accomplish it, it’s not enough, we need more, and we need to reach higher. Fortunately this is a really good thing; this pushes society and keeps us moving forward. One question that arises from this idea is, Can dreams be accomplished? Once we seem to achieve one dream we just dream higher and higher, making our dreams never fully satisfied. A dream is not an obtainable number or object, it is a journey. As Thomas Jefferson stated in the Declaration of Independence “that [all men] are endowed by their creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.” “Happiness is not something ready made. It comes from your own actions (Dalai Lama XIV),” it is a feeling that humans strive for, but this great feeling does not last forever and it is the journey to get to this occasional feeling is what Americans are entitled to. As humans we are not defined by who we are currently but how we got there. The American dream cannot be defined, not by the government, not by your parents, and not by anyone but yourself. The reason people flock to America is that their pursuit of their dream is not dictated by social status, family wealth, or class. America gives its citizens’ freedom, to keep their beliefs and to preach them free of punishment and government interaction. All Americans are entitled to these freedoms and to truly have the ability to pursue their goals free of fear and judgment. Risks can and must be taken free of guilt, “A ship in harbor is safe, but that is not what ships are built for (William Shedd).” It is equality that built this nation and it is that strong belief that runs this country today. The American dream has changed throughout the years it “has been tested and [it] has triumphed (Michael Bloomberg)” with one principle, equality and freedom. As time progressed more races and people have gained equality and everyone is put on a level playing field. The American dream is not defined with a specific image and common goal.
