Modifying a Lesson Plan for English Language Learners (ELL) By Linda Brown Teaching Literacy to ELL Students E6536 Instructor: Ella Benson Argosy University As the number of English learners increases in schools across the United States, educators are seeking effective ways to help them acquire the knowledge and skills they need to succeed in the classroom. The SIOP Model* is a research-based and validated model of sheltered instruction. Professional development in the SIOP Model helps teachers plan and deliver lessons that allow English learners to acquire academic knowledge as they develop English language proficiency. The Center for Applied Linguistics is an excellent place for educators to gather research-based tools for working effectively with English Language Learners. This is a model, I will use to create a lesson plan for ELL students. The key points are to clearly post, refer to, and review learning objectives and language objectives.
Without an appropriate background, teachers can inadvertently isolate or alienate LEP students who need to feel like they are “part of the instructional setting” so a positive self-image is preserved (Carrasquillo & Rodriguez, 2001). Often, LEP students need special language programs which will supplement their learning needs fairly. Because of the rise of “immigrants and high fertility rates among linguistically and culturally diverse groups in the United States,” (Carrasquillo & Rodriguez, 2001) the number of students in need of special resources such as language development programs and better trained teachers is significant. Educators need to adapt teaching styles to fit the needs of these students because they are important of our country’s diverse
Teachers need to look at their ELL students as individuals with background knowledge, a culture, and prior knowledge. The goal of bilingualism is to teach the student English while appreciating their native culture including their ability to speak, read and write in their home language. Students, who continue to develop their native language while acquiring the English language, learn the second language faster. Due to this fact it is very important to get the student's parents involved in the education of their child, and to create a working relationship with their
We don’t ever stop and think how much value the word FREEDOM has on other people in other states. In the book “The Dressmaker of Khair Khana”, by Gayle Tzemach Lemmon she goes in deep into the country of Afghanistan. There she meets the Sidiqi family, where in particular Kamila, which is the oldest daughter living in the household stands out in between all the chaos that is surrounding them. In 1996 the Taliban Regime took over Kabul Afghanistan, and that happened to be where
Donald Bear, Marcia Invernizzi, Shane Templeton, and Francine Johnston (2008) explain that there are two purposes for word studies. First is to help students develop a general knowledge of English spellings. Second, word study increases their specific knowledge of the spelling and meanings of words. Word studies are developmental because teachers must differentiate instruction for different levels of word knowledge (Bear et. Al, 2008).
Someday, I didn’t even wanted to go to school because my teachers used to use a strong punishment for students who come to class and they’re not prepared. The most difficult part was for me was pronunciation since my major was “English” and we usually don’t practice English in my country except for “ doctors” and “engineering” I had many words that couldn’t even read neither pronounce it. I think that our minds must be area or gap for choice about how to think in order to understand things well as Ho thoughtful about children’s mind in the article 2. Which of Ho’s ideas
This can have a negative effect on the children and cause them to ‘hate’ school and as soon as they are able to they will ‘drop out’. According to Deborah White who wrote the guide in about.com, she stated, “These supporters also believes that NCLB initiative will further democratize U.S. education, by setting standards and providing resources to schools, regardless of wealth, ethnicity, disabilities or language spoken” (2011). Since the NCLB’s 2002 inception, the act hasn’t been effective in improving education in public education; this is evident in the high schools mixed results in the standardized tests. In January 2007, Education Secretary Margaret Spellings published "Building on Results: A Blue print for Strengthening the No Child Left Behind Act," in which the Bush Administration: • Asserts that the Act "is challenging our students to succeed and our schools to improve." • Claims that "90% of teachers have met NCLB's highly qualified teacher requirements... At-risk students are getting help earlier... children with disabilities are receiving more classroom time and attention...
Language is an important part of each person life and is used as one’s everyday as a part of communication between two or more individuals. Humans have the unusual skills to benefit the use of native language are an essential tool to communicate with others, which is the basic part from humans to animals. However, the structural features of human language, in accordance to Chomsky , it is creative nature (by Aaron Stark). Arbitrary can first defined as the context and connection among specific parts within language. Therefore, the characters are believed to be the main characteristic in arbitrary and the sound or fundamental imitate the context.
Parents can be very powerful if enough parents like a teacher you are golden and you are in trouble if enough parents do not like you. For most parents it is very important to them to like the person that is caring for their children, especially when children are young. Having a good relationship with parents can put them at ease and in turn make them trust you
'Questioning enables teachers to check learners' understanding. It also benefits learners as it encourages enitgagement and focuses their thinking on key concepts and ideas.' (Kyriacou 1995 in Desforges 1995, pg. 126) I am of the opinion that the idea children should work in mixed ability groups is not always a viable option. I feel it is important to take into account the personalities of the children, as learning may be inhibited if one child is particularly domineering or intimidating.
