With the use of understatement and irony, the letter states his values as a loving, yet strict father who only wants his son to succeed and nothing more. "I confess I have often my doubts whether [my writing] is of any use to you", the first line in Chesterfield's letter, shows that he is doubtful as to whether or not his advice will help his son. The use of understatement is very clear here, as Chesterfield is making it seem like his words aren't as important as they really are. "I know how unwelcome advice generally is" is a clear example of this. Chesterfield is making his words feel unnecessary and not worth the time to read.

In fact, his father praised a young man that worked as a clerk and insisted that Paul ought to be more like that gentleman. His father refused to give Paul money and argued that he has a job, so he can pay his own expenses.
A Mexican White Boy In the book A Mexican White Boy by Matt de la Pena the main character Danny, a very introverted and almost neurotic character is faced with many obstacles he needs to overcome. One of which is his abandonment issues, which I believe is also the root at which his other developing issues have stemmed from. The true root witch all of Danny other problems came from is the fact his dad left him as a child. Another issue that Danny suffers from is his lack of capability to place his trust in others. This causes Danny to shelter his emotions from the world, and that leads to the next problem.
He is disliked by his children especially the oldest son because he is hypocritical by doing the things he scolds them not to. The mother of the family (played by Jessica Chastain) is loved and adored by her sons. She teaches them to live freely and to enjoy the world around them. The parent’s contrasting views confuse the oldest son and make him resentful of the situation he is currently living in. The film is not so cut and dry as the previous plot summary makes it sees.
Nnaemeka marries out of tradition, where the father chooses who he wants his son to marry. His son chose himself and that is a great disrespect to his people. It causes pain and disappointment to the father.
