CHAPTER ONE INTRODUCTION 1.1 Introduction This chapter describes the discovery of oil, the problem faced in the industries of petroleum and the objectives of the study. 1.2 Background of study Petrol, diesel and natural gas for vehicle are the most frequent fuel use in vehicle and some machinery. Devold (2006) states that at the end of 19th century, automobile industry rapidly developed and uses fuel to start the engine, the aircraft engines need gasoline and ship can move more fast when they use oil. 1.2.1 History Tarbell (1996) states that in the beginning, oil is just use for lighting and lubrication. It is also use as medicine before Samuel M. Kier who believes there is another prospect of oil usage sent a sample to specialist and starts to discover there is something that can be used for another purpose. According to Raymond (2006), oil is first found by Uncle Billy in 1859. After testing the oil, he then quickly and very excited to tell Colonel Edwin Drake that he have founded oil. Drake then rush to the scene. With his limited budget, Edwin Drake laboring several workers and search for facility that he can bought in his budget. Jeremy Hinsdale (2004) writes the owner of Pennsylvania Rock Oil Company of New York, George Bissel makes an agreement with Colonel Edwin L. Drake to dig deep for oil in the famous place that they believe to have oil in Titusville, Pennsylvania. The day that begins the new age of oil industry is on 27 August 1859 after Drake struck oil in the depth of 21 meters. 1.3 Problem Statement a) The burning of petroleum fuels from vehicle, houses, business firm and for generate electricity is the main reason of global warming. After the burning of petroleum, it creates gas that is dangerous to living thing. The gas such as carbon monoxide, sulfur dioxide and nitrogen oxides can harm people because these gases can
