Item 2B “For functionalist sociologists, the family is an important institution in society. They see the family as having a number of roles essential to the smooth running of society. For example, the family is seen as key to socialising children into the norms and values of society. Other sociologists argue that the functionalist view is too uncritical and ignores the conflict that takes place within the family.” For functionalist sociologists the family is an important institution in the modern day society. Functionalists like Murdock, Parsons and Fletcher see the family as having a number of essential roles to give a ‘smooth running society.’ George Murdock, a functionalist, looked at 250 societies in the US.
Both societies are under a ruling body of civilization and power of control. The characters from both the novel and the movie are in the process of finding a discovery within each society. The consequences are severe if they are found to be against the powers that be which include persecution. Anthem and The Island, tend to live upon a very mysterious lifestyle with missing components they are unknown throughout life. The comparisons are shown through the following six types of categories that strongly represent the trends of similarity throughout the novel “Anthem” and the movie “The Island”.
In creating a smooth transition from one paragraph to another, Jefferson uses a method of first presenting the issue, why the people of American colonies should separate from Great Britain. Then he states his thesis that, because of the tyranny of the King, the colonies must replace his rule with a new form of government. He then gave support toward the reason for his thesis by giving twenty-eight examples of all the wrongs accepted by the Colonies. After the evidence, Jefferson disproves, conflicting to the arguments by explaining how the Colonists respectfully requested for the King to give them what they needed, to make up for what he had done to them, but the King harshly continued his abuses. Cadets must show they are responsible or they might not get the job that they want or get to go to the college that was there dream school. By showing fellow Americans that you can be responsible, you get the stuff that you want because people will think highly of you. Therefore, living by the creed, you have the benefit of gaining more responsibility. Cadets can show they are a better citizen by living by this creed. By not lying, stealing, or cheating, cadets have the ability to become a model citizen.
When the first copy of the novel was in print, and being distributed, the book began with an introduction as to how the children ended up on the island. He uses symbolism to show the reader how shallow technology is, and what the effects of governmental power can do to a society with no ideas to contradict it. Education, and the wisdom gained from it, is the base of the very society we live in today. Since the beginning of time we have slowly advanced our ideas and evolved to our present world now through innovation. This novel tells a story of a time where books will be burned and be replaced by television.
To fulfil their needs, they try to find a group where someone can lead them and make them feel safe. When Ralph blows the conch, unbeknownst to him, it becomes a signal for them to obey. Being a process of growing up, independence is the exercise of capability of surviving in society, and It is also the process that we develop a good personality. In this process, we constantly improve themselves, and eventually become a responsible person. In the short story, “That Room”, Tobias Wolff explores a compact and powerful narrative. The main character is a teenager who wants to be independent, and the idea of independence means trying on a different lifestyle, but being independent is not as easy as he thought.
The symbolism and colour has made me realise the importance that we need to be careful of the people we interact with because it can alter our perspective of belonging. The centralisation of the white line suggests that the dad is trying to break through the barrier which the brothers have put up. Previous encounters of an individuals environment affects their sense of belonging. throughout the book, ‘The Simple Gift’, Billy is searching for belonging as he was alienated due to his father and where he lived. The poem, ‘Longlands Road’, creates an image where Billy lived with his father.
