Wider Reading Assignment In both novels, Lord of the Flies written by William Golding and A Clockwork Orange written by Anthony Burgess is a constant theme exploring the different aspects of freedom/civilization and the results of it being taken away from us and it being given to us. During the main part of Lord of the flies, Golding opens our eyes to what he believe will happen when entire freedom is given and when civilization is abolished. However Burgess shows us what he believes would happen if freedom is taken away from us and if civilization is forced upon us. In ‘Lord of the Flies’ from the moment the boys crashed on to the island they were immediately granted their freedom to do whatever they please. However these boys had come from a culture where in order to live peacefully and fairly they must maintain their civilization and society which they had learnt from their family back home in England. ‘Seems to me we ought to have a chief to decide things.’ (Page 29) from this we instantly see how these boys try to maintain their society which they have been brought up in, by trying to elect a leader in the group. This suggests to us that Golding feels for order to be maintained a leader must be selected to make sure that it stays that way and this also suggests that Golding feels that this is human nature and it’s natural for the necessity of human beings to want a leader. Also in ‘A Clockwork Orange’ a leader is also elected amongst the boys however this leader was elected to ruin society instead of maintaining it like in ‘Lord of the Flies’. In this situation however Burgess conveys the inner desire to be in charge and in control through Alex, a very powerful character in the novel. Another aspect in which the authors explore freedom in this instance is how the option of who becomes the leader differs between the two novels. In ‘Lord of the Flies’ the boys
