Comparing "The Lottery" and "The Veldt"

“The Lottery” and “The Veldt”… Being Compared You might like to ask, “What story is more disturbing, “The Lottery” written by Shirley Jackson or “The Veldt” by Ray Bradbury?” or “Whose death is more deserved or violent?” “Which story would you live in?” These are some of the many questions you might ask, but I can only cover one topic. Since these stories are SO incredibly disturbing, I have a hard time finding which one is more disturbing. In my opinion, “The Veldt” is more disturbing. Just think of children being so obsessed with their fancy technology that they are willing to kill their own parents, who want to shut it all off. “The Lottery” is similar. The people of the village are showing perfect examples of irony, or betrayal to the person they used to laugh with. Murders occur in both stories. The people in “The Lottery”, who knew what was about to happen continued collecting stones, so Tessie Hutchinson’s so-called “friends” could stone her to death. “The Veldt” is different, however, it describes the violent death Peter and Wendy planned for their parents in the nursery. This story didn’t have as much foreshadowing as “The Lottery”, so it was more of a disturbing surprise to me. I had no idea it was coming, but the author did give hints saying something strange and unusual was going to happen soon. As I read “The Lottery”, I just had that feeling of someone dieing, and soon, but in “The Veldt”, it was all so different, it surprised me. This is why I think “The Veldt” is more disturbing, because of the surprises. The two stories gave me chills though. I do feel confident in saying I shivered as I completed my reading of “The
