Comparing and Contrasting “Psycho” and “ The Storm” The two stories “Psycho” and “ The Storm” have two different styles of suspense that affect the readers and viewers in different ways. Throughout the story “Psycho”, there is a number of themes that add to the suspense to make the movie much more scary. A key factor that makes the movie more suspenseful is the music. The music is what makes “Psycho” so original compared to other scary movies. The music contains a number of different types of string instruments playing single notes in the minor key simultaneously, creating a terrible high-pitched noise. If the movie didn’t have the music, it would defiantly change the affect of scariness to the viewers point of view. The sketchy and awful sounding music is was gives the movie its suspense, and lets the the viewers know that something is going to happen. Other themes that add to the suspense of the movie would include the way Hitchcock presents the setting. In the movie, he uses shadows, mirrors, and close ups on objects to frighten the viewers. Throughout the film, shadows are present from start to finish. For an example, when Mrs. Baits is shown killing Marion or the detective, her face is never shown. Usually Hitchcock managed to use shadows to block her identity or her face, leaving the viewers with curiosity of what she looks like, and if there is a reason for her face not be shown. Throughout the story “The Storm”, McKnight uses a creative and unique style of suspense that takes terror to the extreme. First, the great detail of setting is scary enough. McKnight goes into depth of the house, offering descriptions such as the coldness of the house, the dying plants, and the neatness of every room. McKnight is able to allow the reader to paint a perfect picture of the house, and puts readers in the eyes of the main character, Janet. This story
