If you lived on the ranch with no one you really knew you would get lonely too. These three people would be the worst people to be friends with because of there actions and there behavior. The most isolated person in the book was"Crooks".I say this because he does not hangout with anyone unless he has to. Crooks distance himself from everyone on the ranch because of his skin color. Crooks does not associate with many people which causes him not to have many friends.
An example of Sykes lack of morals is, “If you such a big fool dat you got to have a fit over an earth worm or a string, ah don’t keer how bad ah skeer you” (705). Cleary Sykes does not care if he hurts or scares Delia and continuous to scare Delia with his ruthless actions. Delia also has lack of morals. Delia shows her lack of moral by leaving her husband in the house
Steinbeck leaves her unnamed so she lacks something that makes her appear as an equal individual. She is not meant to be very important in this novel. Curley’s wife is not part of the story to connect with the reader, and by giving her a name, the reader would become much more attached. Curley’s wife is isolated and ignored in Of Mice and Men. She isn’t cared about at all.
In Romulus,Romulus is depicted as an individual unable to belong to his surroundings. The quote “though the landscape is one of rare beauty… father could not become reconciled to it” indicates to the reader the father’s inability to connect with the landscape and thus develop a sense of belonging. Gaita also characterises Christine with a similar depiction. Christine, a “city girl”, is represented as an individual unable to find a sense of self because of a lack of connection to place. The quote “She could not settle into a dilapidated farmhouse in a landscape that highlighted her isolation” exemplifies a diminished sense of belonging resulting from a lack of an environment that is suited to her.
Physical and Mental Uneasiness Discomfort is defined as physical or mental uneasiness. It can be caused by the smallest thing such as a flea or a catastrophe such as losing your house to a fire. In the short story “Strays” composed by Mark Richard, a theme of discomfort is portrayed whether it is evident in the dogs, boys, parents, uncle, or as a result of things lost. The dogs show discomfort in their appearance and through their behaviors. The dogs are strays so they don’t have an owner to take care of them.
Values of Companionship Imagine a life with no one to talk to, being ignored, and being treated unfairly. This is how Crooks lived like in John Steinbeck’s novella, Of Mice and Men. Crooks didn’t have any companions so he acted differently than the characters with companions do in the book. While Crooks was more independent, George and Lennie relied on each other. The importance of companionship is shown by the characters with companions having different personalities than those without.
By giving good descriptions Steinbeck is able to make the reader feel sympathy for Crooks , Lennie, Candy and as they have to deal with prejudice. Crooks have to live in the stables by himself because he is a “nigger” and therefore not allowed to enjoy some qualities of life. Lennie is mentally slow so people treat him bad. When George and Lennie goes to the farm to get the job George has to cover for him because if the boss knows that he is mentally slow then they would not get a job. Candy has to deal with prejudice because he is old and he only has one hand.
The opposite of this urge would be to not have any pets at all. One could desensitize themselves to the joy and love an animal could bring and not want to own one at all. This also compounds the Humane Society of Southern Arizona’s problem because that is one less potential home for a homeless pet. The Humane Society of Southern Arizona has taken a stance in the middle ground. It advocates responsible pet ownership.
How does the text link to the concept of belonging? You must also consider the concept of not belonging. “The Island” shows a sense of not belonging through the alienation and treatment the refugee encounters while he is on the island. The islanders do not cloth him (this leaves the refugee vulnerable), don’t give him work (even the church a place with a philosophy of inclusion, rejects the refugee and deciphers him as a devil), only give him leftover food and do not accept him into the community by locking him away from sight in the goat pen. “The Island”, furthermore shows a sense of not belonging when they reject the refugee and leave him to his certain death in the dark ocean because he is perceived as both different and therefore dangerous.
Far too many are dumped along desolate roads where the owner cannot be seen throwing their dog or cat away like trash to fend for themselves. What many people do not know is that once a dog or cat is a “domesticated” animal they usually cannot survive out in the wild on their own, they need their human companion for food and shelter. Many people also do not believe in getting their pet fixed (spayed, neutered). They believe that it harms them in some way, but this is not true. Supply and demand also plays a role in the overpopulation problem looming the United States.
