Compare the way Larkin presents the issues of consumerism in sunny Prestatyn, The Large Cool Store and Take One Home for the Kiddies? Kieren Hynard Larkin presents the issues of consumerism by using the three poems, Sunny Prestatyn, The Large Cool Store and Take One Home for the Kiddies. In Take One Home for the Kiddies, Larkin is very critical of consumerism because of the way in which animals in the poem are treated. For example “Shallow straw and shade less glass” suggests the animals discomfort and shows us the miserable conditions in which they are being cared for in. It also suggests that the animals have no protection from the light or the sun. Larkin uses alliteration at the beginning to show how the straw isn’t deep enough to keep the animals comfortable. Another example is “Huddled by empty bowls, they sleep” this suggests that the animals have no food or water, yet again showing that the animals aren’t being cared for and being left there just to be bought or sold like slaves. Also the word “huddled” suggests that they are not given enough space, just like slaves, there just there for an attraction to lure customers in, therefore meaning that they are there for consumer’s purposes. On the other hand, another example is “No dark, no dam, no earth, no grass” this suggests that the animals have no protection from sunlight, and that they have no mother so that means that they also have no natural provider. However, another example to show the effect of consumerism is “Mam get us one of those to keep” suggests the demand of the children and that they show no appreciation towards the animals making the animals uncomfortable. Larkin also shows this by stating this, for example “Living toys are something novel” suggests the children use the animals as toys, making the animals uncomfortable and the children show no love or even cherish their pet.
