Compare & Contrast “Weekend” Ann Beattie and “The Wedding” Joy Williams The weekend and the weeding are stories about love and its flaws. The characters not knowing what they want makes everything mystifying. The weekend and the wedding are similar, but yet different. Both stories are about relationships, but cannot find true love or they haven’t noticed it yet. Everyone has their flaws and makes mistakes which make a relationship incomplete. I’ll be summarizing both stories, compare and contrast them throughout this essay. Even though problems always exist, you can always find a way to solve them. The weekend basically talks about two lovers, who live with each other, George and Lenore. George; a 50 year old man who is a retired professor with an obvious dark past that he seems, doesn’t want to remember. He cares about his appearance and does not actually look young with little white hair on him. She is 21 years younger than him and they have two children together, even though they are not married. Also, he has a daughter from his only marriage. George has his old students visiting him nearly every weekend, being the hospitable person he is. His actions make Lenore suspicious because they are always women who are not married. She is not stupid and knows what is going on and we know this because of the narrator. The narration style in this story is 3rd person and this is very helpful, especially in this story because we are always contemplating about what both parties are thinking. By having a 3rd person view, who knows everything going on so we get to know the story better and learn about both of their points of view. The theme of this story is relationships, lovers (love), complications, suspicion and expectations as well as marriage.
