ySahil Mehta Professor Guenther Sociology 001 October 29, 2010 School Safety Littleton, Colorado was a Midwestern city that went relatively unheard of until April 20, 1999. It was on that Tuesday morning that the small suburban town became the site of the worst high school shooting in American history. Armed with guns, knives, and a multitude of bombs, Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold walked the halls of Columbine High School and embarked on a massacre. At the end of the day, twelve students, one teacher, and the two murderers were pronounced dead. “But until Columbine, they hadn't been slapped hard enough to start doing something," says Harvard Medical School psychologist William Pollack. I decided to visit my old high school back home in Cerritos and observe the security conducts the school has to offer. Though the school has no surveillance cameras or metal detectors, a police department is located right across the street from it. Thus, every time I would attend school in the morning or leave in the afternoon, I would witness at least half a dozen police officers roaming the school parking lots. During Columbine, the first SWAT team to arrive to the high school didn’t enter the school until forty minutes after the first 9-1-1 call. Many lives could’ve been saved if street officers were trained to enter the school. In Jennifer Hunt’s article, Police Accounts of Normal Force, she discusses how rookie police officers are being trained to take immediate action during incidents involving deadly force. The rookies are encouraged to carry around more powerful weapons, substituting the wooden baton and convoy jack (which are more likely to break when used) with the plastic nightstick and the flat-headed slapjack, in order to inflict the most damage possible in certain…show more content…
So when I ask the question “How has the Columbine High School Massacre affected the safety of students across America”, I answer it by stating that human beings must learn to pattern their behavior and adapt it to the society in which they live. Thus, through the use of metal detectors, surveillance cameras, and an increase in on-campus security guards and police officers, schools across the country can give their students a reason not to worry about attending
