Women were another vulnerable group because they were always paid at a lower rate than men. There was no safety net for people who fell into poverty other than resorting to the ‘workhouse’ which had been established to deal with cases of extreme poverty in Trade unions had little power as the Taff Vale Incident of 1901 showed and Friendly Societies could only provide a limited amount of help. Attitudes to poverty in the early 20th century were quite unsympathetic many politicians from both the Liberal and Conservative party felt that poverty came from personal laziness. Both parties had an attitude of “laissez-faire” i.e. non interference from the government.
The strength of the economy encouraged Americans to take out more loans and buy more stocks, making them susceptible to future changes in the economy. The freedom caused financial markets to crash globally which helped power the Great Depression. Another example of lack of government intervention was the robber barons, a term referring to the wealthy and powerful businessmen in the 18th century. They were also known as “pure capitalists”, because they believed in an economic system that involved minimal interference from the government. Those working for robber barons were beaten and threatened, and the working conditions were terrible.
The image shows the two classes of wealth present in the town, one, being the rich, represented by the large, well kept houses both with solar panels on the roof, yet also clearly the minority. Two, being the working class represented by the collection of smaller houses who aren’t able to afford the panels. The reader then sees the families living in the less attractive houses being forced to pay the Mayor their well earned money, when clearly they have many a good use for it. One of the main ways in which Bob Walsh appeals to the audience is through denigrating his opponents. Using unflattering insults such as, “lazy, hippie and
The Super Rich Are Killing Our Democracy It was foretold by Thomas Jefferson that the downfall of a democracy is the accumulation of wealth by the rich and the lack of money for the poor. This is now happening with the Super Corporations controlling the flow of money and the flow of money controlling our politicians. Barbara Ehrenreich, in her article, “The Trouble With The Super Rich”, talks about: America being divided more and more by money. The upper class is shrinking in size, but not in wealth. Having such a small amount of people possessing such a large amount of the wealth will pull down society.
In some countries, no middle class exists. Only high class and low class, if someone is not rich they are dirt poor. In some third world countries people struggle just to survive. They have to live day to day not knowing if they will have a full meal, much less any scraps to eat. They have to go looking for food by either; looking through dumpsters, beg for the food or scrape up some change, enough to buy a very small portion.
In F. Scott Fitzgerald’s The Great Gatsby, the people in the high class New York society focus solely on how they are perceived by others in their social class. They lead a life of wealth and glamor and are much less concerned with anything other than how educated one is, or how much money they are making. Jay Gatsby has fallen into this social trap, but not by choice. In order to regain the love his once had, Gatsby conforms himself to the surrounding society, which along with his sense of innocence, will ultimately be the cause of his death. In this New York society, there are two main wealthy classes.
One of these ways is through education. Many working class people don’t go on to further education and prefer to stay in lower paid jobs and the type of jobs they do can underpin which class they belong to. Those who come from a working class background are those who engage in popular culture and therefore they don’t take the time to follow or think about the high culture which means that they don’t have access to better education for a chance of having success. One way in which education may shape working class identity is by the
This world has an extreme class system, technology, and promiscuity. The class system in Brave New World is extremely strict. The Alphas, or the richer class, are not allowed to even interact with the lower classes. Our society is not quite this strict but to an extent we are like this. For example, a rich person would not usually talk to a dirty homeless person.
It doesn’t seem like the government is doing much to fix the situation. They make a lot of promises they can’t keep. The government is made up of mostly wealthy Americans who can’t relate to the troubles that face average people. The problem is nationwide. There are so many people out of work and struggling to keep a roof over their heads and food on the table and it’s difficult to hear about these wealthy executives
American is the best country in the world and always will be, we have more freedom and opportunity than anyone could want. And, as America continues to grow and move forward there will be poor countries that will not. It is a person’s nature to take care of themselves, and if they have a family they will do whatever it takes no matter what, to take care of their family and put them first. Illegally coming to America is not always best but you do whatever you need to do. Even though some people may look down on illegal immigrates and have negative thoughts and feelings toward them, I do not.
