Christianity Principal Beliefs Jesus as human and define: * Centuries after Jesus’s death, there were different points of view of his relationship to god. * Romans at this time believed people could become gods (Roman emperors often turned into gods after death) * They didn’t understand why a god would make himself into a man. * The Roman Emperor Constantine was becoming increasingly interested in Christianity and wanted to see the dispute resolved. * Created the ‘Council Of Nicea’- first council of the Christian Church. * Passages in the New Testament speack of Jesus’s divinity and humanity. * It is also spoken in terms of a sacrifice for sin and a sign of his divinity. Nature of God and the Trinity: * Early disciples of Jesus were Jews who only believed in one god. * Over time began to believe Jesus was God and that the holy spirit was also a form of God. * Trinity means that there is only 1 God and 3 persons, (father, son and holy spirit) * The word ‘trinity’ does not occur in the bible, and some reject the idea due to that. * However, there are suggestions through the whole bible that support the concept. Revelation: * Is the disclosure of something that could not have been revealed without the word of god * The main Christian revelation is that which God revealed through Jesus, which later took the form of the Gospels. Salvation: * Another significant meaning behind Jesus’ death is that it was a ritual sacrifice. * Jesus knew that he was to die, it was his fate. * Salvation in Christianity means 3 different things: 1. Those who are poor in spirit shall be given the kingdom of heaven. 2. The patient shall inherit the land. 3. Those who are mourning shall be comforted. 4. Those who hunger and thirst for holiness shall be fulfilled. 5. Those who are pure of heart shall see God. 6. Those who are peacemakers shall be called children of god. 7. Those who suffer persecution shall be given the kingdom of heaven. Personal Devotion Prayer: * Personal devotion for Christians revolves around prayer, it can be a request, an offering of praise or an attempt to communitcate with entities beyond the world. (God, Jesus, Mary, the saints and angels etc) * Encouraged in the Bible, a prayer is essentially a way of communicating with God. Different Types of Prayers: * Jesus taught the most significant prayer in Christianity, the Lord’s Prayer. * The prayer was said in Latin for almost 2000 years in Latin Churches all over Western Europe. * There are many slightly different versions. * Christians can be said in written form or extemporary form (memorised) Summary * Christianity began with the influences from the Greek, Roman and Jewish
