Gung Hay Fat Choy Everyone!!! that means: wishing you prosperity and wealth. Chinese New Year is the biggest event and holiday in China. It is the time for family reunions, celebrating your achievements in the past year, and giving thanks. Chinese New Year comes from the Lunar Calendar, which was developed by the ancient Chinese according to the cycle movement of the Moon against the Sun. New Year’s Day normally falls into January or February, and this year it is January 26th. It is the day of the first new moon. The celebration continues until the tenth of Febuary, when the moon is brightest. Twelve animals have been chosen to represent each year in a cycle of twelve years. They are the rat, ox, tiger, rabbit, dragon, snake, horse, sheep, monkey, rooster, dog and pig. Some believe that people born in that year carry some characteristics of that animal. Two thousand nine is The Year of the Ox. The most important thing to do to celebrate the Chinese New Year is to get together with your family. This is the time people travel all the way across the country to visit their parents and loved ones. It might be the worst time for a long trip, but it will be worth it. Your presence, itself, is the best gift you can send to your parents. (I know MY parent would LOVE me as a gift *sarcastic*) China is a big country and the way to celebrate the Chinese New Year can vary from place to place, but here are some common things you might do: First, do some housekeeping and wipe out the dust, that means clean the whole house inside and out! This ritual is not only to get the home ready for guest, but also to get rid of evil spirits. Second, decorate your house. Place kumquat plants, and red lanterns all throughout the home, even outside too. You might even want to have the Kitchen God which is simply a mystical god that watches over the household.
