Abstract This paper is an examination on the effects of child poverty in North America. It will inspect the consequences that poverty has on a child’s physical, cognitive and emotional development. It will also analyze a number of organizations in North America and the world that attempt to minimize and eliminate child hunger and poverty. Finally, this paper will conclude by giving a detailed look into poverty mitigation strategies and lifestyle changes that can reduce child disabilities and promote child development. One possible explanation for the causation between poverty and negative social behaviours is that many impoverished families are single parent households with less parental supervision (Moore, 2009 p.4). Another explanation is that many impoverish families live in low-income neighbourhoods and children don’t get to experience the social norms that many people take for granted. For example, “homicide rates are highest in areas of extreme poverty, and children exposed to such violence are at greater risk of psychosocial difficulties, such as internalizing behaviours and acting out behaviours” (Moore, 2009,…show more content…
