Cheerleading is a Sport During cheerleading season, there are cheerleaders all over the world who have to argue the meaning of a sport. The cheerleaders have to argue that the activity is a sport and not a hobby. People fail to realize that cheerleaders do not only prance around and cheer on individual sports. The media too often neglects the true values of cheerleading. Television shows and movies stereotype cheerleaders as quirky, dumbfound, and popular. Ninemire states that sports are “defined as a ‘physical activity that is governed by a set of rules or customs and often engaged in competitively’” (par. 2). Cheerleading, without a doubt, fits this description. Cheerleading is a year round not seasonal. There are two different types of cheerleading styles. There is the traditional cheering for football or basketball, and there is the cheering for competitions. Either style is still represented as a sport because in most cases the seasonal sport cheerleaders also partake in competition cheering. The sport consists of national competitions, rising numbers of injuries, and complex skills. There are many qualifications are mandatory in order for an activity to be deemed a sport. Some may say that cheerleading does not meet any of the requirements, but this is false. Lauchaire states that “it must be a physical activity which involves propelling a mass through space or overcoming the resistance of mass...’contesting’ or competing against/with an opponent is required” (par. 3). Cheerleading meets both of these requirements. Cheerleaders do not only cheer for the seasonal sport, but also take part in competitions. A team can compete against at least twenty-five teams depending on the number of teams in the division.
