The High Cost of Cheap Fashion: Problems vs. Solutions Every morning, working Americans rise from their slumber and begin their eight hour days at their jobs or in their careers that they may or may not enjoy, but one fact remains the same, money is a necessity. People go to work because of their constant need for money, regardless of what their job is. But let’s switch gears, if you were being treated badly in the workplace, being discriminated against, or you felt that you were not safe, would you still go? I cannot answer for most people, but my answer is no. Sadly, people in other countries do not have the privilege of saying no, or the privilege of finding another job as quickly as one can find here in America. Now, I know what you are thinking, “it’s not easy to find a job here, the way that our economy is”, but it sure beats trying to find a job in rural, undeveloped countries. Our main topic is going to be the garment industry and the changes it has made in the past few decades. Usually, when we talk about changes, we are talking about the strides they have made towards success, but in this case, we are going to be discussing the opposite. We are going to focus on the problems in the overseas garment industry and more importantly, the possible solutions. As time has gone by, it has gotten more affordable to buy clothing, especially with all of the ever-changing trends that come and go every season. In previous decades, good quality clothing was not in “the average American’s” reach when it came to price. As the years have passed, prices have plummeted and even people working for minimum wage can afford to buy fashionable clothing in well-known stores. Have you ever wondered why you can go into stores like Forever 21 or H&M and find a $2.80 tank top and a $6.80 pair of shorts? How in the world can clothing be that affordable?
