Achieving Job Goals and Career Objectives Achieving Job Goals and Career Objectives In today’s economy, many companies have reduced overhead through layoffs, decreased spending and relocation of facilities overseas. Making your way through this quagmire of uncertainty is a challenge for anyone regardless of his or her current employment status. Yet, despite all the insecurity, one factor has remained constant and that is the need for law and government. Therefore, my goal is to pursue a career in research and law as a paralegal with the objective of obtaining a government position in the United States Department of Justice (USDOJ). Paralegal Job Description A legal assistant now widely called a paralegal assists attorneys with substantive legal work. This includes drafting legal documents such as case briefs, legal memos, researching case law, interviewing clients and depending on the company other administrative office duties (Cheeseman & Goldman, 2008, p. 4). A recent opening for a legal assistant at the USDOJ (United State Department of Justice, 2010) list some of the requirements for the job to include answering inquires by phone and in person, conducting legal research on the internet by accessing legal databases such as Westlaw and having knowledge of automated systems used to manage data. Another important requirement listed is good time management skills with the ability to organize correspondence and meet deadlines for processing legal documents. Some of the qualifications the candidate needs to demonstrate include good oral and written communication, type 40wpm; have at least a year of specialized experience equivalent to a government specialist level 4 or a four-year degree. Short Term Goals In the next five years, I hope to complete my associate degree and possibly move on to bachelors in Business Administration with International Business
