Including the following elements: Unity of Mood, Rhythm, Melody, Dynamics, Texture, and the Basso Continuo or Figured Bass. Music was an essential part of civic, religious, and courtly life in the Renaissance. The rich interchange of ideas in Europe, as well as political, economic, and religious events in the period 1400–1600 led to major changes in styles of composing, methods of disseminating music, new musical genres, and the development of musical instruments. The most important music of the early Renaissance was composed for use by the church—polyphonic (made up of several simultaneous melodies) masses and motets in Latin for important churches and court chapels. By the end of the sixteenth century, however, patronage was split among many areas: the Catholic Church, Protestant churches and courts, wealthy amateurs, and music printing—all were sources of income for composers. The early fifteenth century was dominated initially by English and then Northern European composers.
Renaissance, as a word, equates to rebirth or revival. The “rebirth” or renewed interests during the Renaissance period arrived in two parts. The first being renewed interest in all aspects of ancient Greek culture, followed by the renewed interest in all aspects of ancient Roman culture. Along with the ancient teachings came a movement of humanism, or singularity stressing the importance of the individual. Artists fixated on realistic, communicative paintings and sculptures following this trend.
Architects were interested in the space of the unfolding universe as well as the workings of the mind and attempted to portray passions of the soul through facial expressions. Features The features of the baroque era showed long, narrow naves that were replaced by a broader, or occasionally with circular forms. It displayed dramatic use of light that could be either strong light-and-shade contrast (known as chiaroscuro)effects; or they used uniform lighting by means of several windows. Another feature was opulent use of ornaments (puttos made of wood (often gilded), plaster or stucco, marble or faux finishing), they used large-scale ceiling frescoes and Baroques external façade is often characterized by a dramatic central projection, however the interior is often no more than a shell for painting and sculpture which was seen in the late Baroque period. The term Baroque is used to describe the art, sculpture, architecture and music in the period between the years 1600 to 1750. It is also defined as the period between the end of Renaissance and the beginning of Neoclassicism, although between Renaissance and Baroque it was interspersed another great stylistics stage called Mannerism. Besides, at the end of Baroque came up another interesting stage, Rococo, connected to Baroque but in an extreme way, with a lot of interest and care on the characteristics of the period. The word Baroque comes from the Portuguese, and means “fake jewellery” or “irregular pearl”.
A couple of periods that have had influence on our culture that continues today are the Renaissance and Baroque periods. Both periods are distinct, but do have many similarities. Not only did these periods have influence on other periods to follow, but they also maintain a presence in our existing culture, arts, and architecture. It is a rare occasions when you can go anywhere without seeing something from one of these periods. It can be as simple as a painting or a work of literature.
The Baroque Period was the age of reason when minds and imaginations opened up new worlds of scientific knowledge as well as artistic creativity. (Fleming, 75) The Baroque era was a period of opulence and magnificence that gave off a powerful awe inspiring style that was full of flamboyant concepts and overall dramatic quality. From Venice, as well as from Rome and the centers where international mannerism flourished, the roads to Baroque art fanned out in all directions. The style of Baroque art was so diverse that it’s difficult to determine what classifies it as being art of the Baroque era. Although Baroque art has many diverse artistic manifestations there are certain general characteristics that appear in all three types of Baroque art.
Music SA #3 The Baroque period saw many changes in music elements, styles, instrument craftsmanship, composer’s roles in societies and it saw the rise in opera. Opera is a dramatic production sung throughout. Opera changed the musical scene, as people knew it. Before this period performance music was mostly used in religious settings or for the very rich or noble classes. The composers of opera were trying to reproduce what they thought was classical Greek theater.
BAROQUE PERIOD The Baroque period lasted from about 1600 to 1750. The Baroque style is noted for its use of exaggerated motion and rich, minute detail in order to bring out emotional intensity like drama, tension, exuberance and grandeur in painting, sculpture, architecture etc. The Oxford English Dictionary states that the term ‘baroque’ has been derived from the Portuguese word ‘barroco’, Spanish ‘barroco’ or French ‘baroque’ which all mean ‘rough or imperfect pearl’, but it can informally also mean something that is elaborate or richly detailed. The term "Baroque" was first rehabilitated by the Swiss-born art historian, Heinrich Wölfflin (1864–1945) in his Renaissance und Barock (1888); Wölfflin identified the Baroque as "movement imported into mass," an art antithetic to Renaissance art. The Baroque style was encouraged by the Roman Catholic Church which wanted works of art to portray religious themes while conveying a sense of direct emotional involvement to the viewers, as a challenge to the Protestant Reformation.
