Geek love was a very interesting novel. The narrator of the story, Olympia, or Oly as they call her, tells the story of her life as an albino hunchback dwarf living with her family as they travel the world as their own circus. I wouldn’t have read it on my own accord but, that put aside it was a very unique, out of the ordinary, puzzling piece of literature. One thing that I would change about the story geek love would be the ending. At the end of the book Oly kills Ms. Lick and then turns around and kills herself because she couldn’t deal with life on life’s terms.
The novel, Green Angel by Alice Hoffman is one of those novels, one that can centers itself around tragedy, and how people cope with such devastation. The story is focused on a fifteen-year old girl named Green, whose life takes a disastrous one-eighty – her entire family killed by a tragic fire that sweeps throughout the city her house outskirts, and temporarily blinds her. The novel is able to entwine human tragedy with human identity beautifully, allowing Green to realize who she really is and what she can be. Humans often struggle with their identity, unsure if they are playing a part and imitating the actions of others or if their voice is really their own. For Green, the protagonist of Hoffman’s novel, she is unsure of this as well.
Idgy is devastated when Buddy’s life is cut short when he is hit by a train and killed. Because of this tragic event, Idgie withdraws from proper society for most of her childhood and teenage years until Buddy's former girlfriend, the prim Ruth Jamison, intercedes at the entreaty of the worried Threadgoode family. Because of the encouragement of Idgie’s family, friends, and acceptance from the community she grew into adulthood as a strong, independent woman. She repeatedly stepped outside what was considered the normal way of living for women in the 1920s era by openly defying the proper society standard way of living. She scoffed at religion, drank alcohol, gambled, wore britches or shorts, was kind to the Negro community, and openly challenged Ruth’s abusive husband.
Throughout the text Cougar Annie proves herself to be a fighter and a survivor by not allowing anything or anyone hold her back from what she wants for her own success as well as her family’s being. Cougar Annie: The concept of Being Ada Annie Rae – Arthur moved to the community of Boat Basin, British Columbia on Vancouver Island in 1915, with her husband and young children. Ada Annie lived a comfortable life with her husband William Arthur in Vancouver; however their life quickly changed when William became addicted to opium and alcohol and lost all their money to this world of drugs and alcohol. As their life became worse, Ada Annie’s father had a role in moving them out to Boat Basin, “out of harm’s way” (Horsfield, 2003, p. 31). Boat Basin is where Ada Annie came to be known as Cougar Annie, as she claimed to have “killed seventy-two cougars in her lifetime” (Horsfield, p19).
This can be seen when the writer talks about what happens “when extremes of temperature collide, winds being generated instantaneously behind a hell and crash upon without warning.” (Erdrich 191). The characterization of “The Leap” is developed through the technique of flashback. One day while the author, Anna Avalon’s daughter was sewing in the room of the rebuilt house, to which she returns after complications in her recent relationship. She hears a crackle from the stove downstairs which brings back the past memories of her talented mother. Even though her mother is half-blind (cataract) now, she walks without bumping into open
Just like Nancy’s promotion of the pink ribbon, the fire shows hope every time it is looked upon or lit up. Every time it is out, hope vanishes and the boys are discouraged to find survival The symbols portrayed from two completely different stories, show how the characters from the novel were effected and how the people of society were effected because of Nancy Brinker. She proved to the world that one person CAN make a difference, and that when you want something, you work for it. Because of Nancy’s work we are coming closer and closer to curing breast cancer forever, and saving millions of lives for the women of the
She renounced all comforts of life such as a house, good clothing, food, and warmth. She would roll in fire and handle it without harm, she would stand in freezing cold water for hours, and she would let herself be whipped around by a water mill, all without sustaining any injury herself. She would also be given into “ecstasies” in which she would lead recently dead souls to Purgatory and souls in Purgatory to Heaven. People didn’t know what to think about her. She was a holy woman and followed God’s will, yet she seemed
Playing with Pestilence Imagine waking up in the morning knowing that this may be the last time you ever wake up. Your whole family has died except for your precious daughter, whom you isolate in a room to prevent her from getting sick. The Black Death is not all to blame, as the typhoid fever is also making a hit. Your daughter hollers that she is thirsty, so you run to the water pump to appeal to her need. Little do you know that you just gave her the water that would soon kill her.

In the last scene Thomasina and Septimus are talking about her theory of how the world is doomed and then they begin to waltz. This shows the mixture of science and pleasure and at the same time rational and irrational thinking. In the beginning they are rationally talking about Thomasinas theory but by the end they are acting impulsively waltzing and even kissing. This scene we know precedes her death. We learned earlier that she died that night before her seventeenth birthday in a fire.
