Upon Malvolio’s entrance in Act II Scene V, Sir Toby states “here’s an overweening rogue!” (Act 2, scene 5, line 27) after plotting with Fabian and Maria to punish Malvolio, referring to him as a “little villain” (Act 2, scene 5, line 12).
Benedick acknowledges women for the good part they have played in his life: 'That a woman conceived me, I thank her' although he still has a deep distrust for women. And so he declares, 'I Will live a bachelor'. Both characters have an ironic sense of their own mind, both are scorners of love and have pledged lives of bachelor and maidenhood. Shakespeare uses imagery to present Benedick’s and Beatrice’s feelings for each other. Leonato reveals to us and the other characters that there is a ‘merry war betwixt the two of them’.
Shakespeare uses the persona of Polonius, as a satirical figure and as a foil, to show what is wrong with the court of the time. Polonius is also the father of Laertes and Ophelia who are integral to the final downfall of the Danish kingdom. The tensions that arise from the death of Polonius is prevalent throughout the remainder of the play, and his passing sets the tone for the rest of the piece. The diction that is used by Polonius in the play “hamlet” is really what defines him as a character. His use of complex language to increase his intelligence is both farcical and comical in nature.
Similarly, pleading with Daisy, Tom invokes their intimate personal history to remind her that she has had feelings for him; by controlling the past, Tom eradicates Gatsby’s vision of the future. That Tom feels secure enough to send Daisy back to East Egg with Gatsby confirms Nick’s observation that Gatsby’s dream is dead. Gatsby’s decision to take the blame for Daisy demonstrates the deep love he still feels for her and illustrates the basic nobility that defines his character. Disregarding her almost capricious lack of concern for him, Gatsby sacrifices himself for Daisy. The image of a pitiable Gatsby keeping watch outside her house while she and Tom sit comfortably within is an indelible image that both allows the reader to look past Gatsby’s criminality and functions as a moving metaphor for the love Gatsby feels toward Daisy.
The Impetuousness of Romeo The play Romeo and Juliet by William Shakespeare presents the moral and social shaping of Romeo’s personality. Through the text Romeo continuously makes illogical decisions that all lead to his death. Romeo’s down fall is a result of irrational and impulsive behaviour he displayed throughout the text. This is conveyed when Romeo consumed in anger killed Tybalt, when Romeo fought with Paris without knowing who he was fighting and when Romeo killed himself not realizing Juliet was still alive. This is some of the proof in the text of Romeo’s impulsiveness.
William Shakespeare establishes Benedick’s character by using diction and imagery to show his changed viewpoint on marriage. Benedick is strongly opinionated and rarely ever let’s his guard down when it comes to feelings or love. After he overhears that Beatrice is in love with him, he ponders what to do. The characterization is established through diction, “And wise, but for loving me; by my troth it is not addition to her wit, nor no great argument of her folly, for I will be horribly in love with her!” (II.3.235-237). He is saying that is might not be wise for loving him, but he swears it won’t be stupid for he is going to be “horribly” in love with her.

Beatrice expresses her acceptance of Benedick’s love but does not realize the love inside Beatrice exists artificially. Beatrice’s faith in her emotions leaves her vulnerable to any criticism of her love to Benedick. For instance, when Hero commands Margaret to fetch Beatrice, Hero and Ursula purposely allow Beatrice to listen to them to invoke a stronger attraction in Beatrice towards Benedick. Shakespeare allows the first sign of the theme deception to manifests itself within Hero and Ursula’s conversation. Shakespeare aims to project a very harsh form of deception here in order to emphasize the power of deception of love.
