ENGLISH DRAMA I A Character Analysis of Lyubov Andreyevna Ranevskaya on The Cherry Orchard Drama by Anton Chekov “LYUBOV’S GENEROSITY AMONG HER LOSSES IN LIFE” By Setya Octaviani (121211223034) ENGLISH DEPARTMENT AIRLANGGA UNIVERSITY 2013 INTRODUCTION Lyubov Andreyevna Ranevskaya, the naive landowner of the cherry orchard, is seen as a helpless, poor lady in the novel, The Cherry Orchard. She has two children, Anya and Varya, and has strong feelings for both of her young daughters. Lyubov also enjoys spending time with her brother, Gayev, even though she does not fully portray this feeling to the rest of the household. Money is not a precious thing to Lyubov. She doesn't work for her money and perhaps has never truly understood that it's not an inexhaustible resource. She was born rich, so she never felt any struggle of working hard to earn money for living. And also, Lyubov is a nurturing person. She is full of love and basically likes to help other people, so I think because of her nurturing sense, she just can’t help her feeling to help other. She is so easy to feel pity and help the people who beg for help right away without thinking about any conditions, for example about her family condition which is almost collapse. To Lyubov, money is abundant and therefore has no value or restrictions. Lopakhin, on the other hand, respects his wealth and has no concept of a rich family history. Although he now has a taste of the good life, he knows the way to remain on top is to be innovative. Upon seeing Madame Ranevsky’s predicament, his solution necessitates clearing the entire estate and all of its memories. All memories will then be vanished, and the new ways will have little regard for the past. The critique is tempered, however, by the fact of Lubov's deeply generous nature. When she's presented with a human face asking her for help, she freely gives it. This nurturing quality is central to her character. As Lopakhin
