Reflective Paper Debbie Warnke Diversity and Special Populations- BSHS/345 June 14, 2015 Chelie Byerly Reflective Paper In this paper I will be discussing the challenges women face through different life stages, the issues that the aging face with the lack of access to employment, and the factors involved in dealing with and overcoming generational poverty. All three of these issues are very important in today’s society and I plan to discuss what I have learned and how it changed my perspective on these issues. Challenges Women Face Through Life A woman experiences complex factors in every part of her life, beginning in the younger years and leading up to the aging years. Complex factors they experience can range from lack of education, lack of social support, employment issues, child caring issues and even discrimination within the healthcare industry. For young women, pressures to achieve academically and socially, and to conform to stereotypes about appearance, can push them into risky behavior including high risk drinking, unprotected sex and unhealthy body image.
In this paper I will discuss the stages of problem solving and decision making and as well my experiences. The first stage of problem solving is being aware of the problem. When I worked as a Pre-K teacher, I had a situation where my assistant would call out sick or leave work early a day where we had some sort of celebration. I always needed her assistance with the children. Celebrating an event with twenty five children is not easy.
I will identify and examine the complex factors needed to overcome generational poverty, define challenges the aged face when there is lack of access to employment, and describe the unique challenges that women face through the different life stages, and lastly I will explain what I learned that changed my perspective on the way I would approach special populations. Generation poverty Generational poverty is defined as a family having been in poverty for at least two generations for more. To overcome generational poverty we need to identify complex factors such as educational poverty, parental poverty, and spiritual poverty. When dealing with generational poverty education is the key. Being in poverty is not about the lack of intelligence or ability, people stay in poverty because they see no other choice or no way out.
