Martha felt the government was out to get her, because she was a successful woman in a business world of men. Martha was fairly and appropriately targeted because of her celebrity. Maintaining ethical and legal norms is one of the jobs of the government, and the prosecution of prominent people makes a much greater impact on everyone else than the anonymous prosecution of an average citizen. Cheating and lying to the government about it is, sadly, too widespread to apprehend everyone doing it. The next best thing is to make an example out of a famous person like Martha.
Jonathan Kawula ENGL 102 Adam Mills 02/17/14 Michael Jordan: King of the Windy City What differentiates an icon from a celebrity? How do their actions make or break their career? Some of the most influential icons show essential qualities such as dignity, integrity, and sportsmanship while exhibiting tremendous talents to the world. However, icons can also display their characteristics negatively in the media because of bad judgment and decisions that put their careers in jeopardy. Today’s youth are influenced by many artists that have criminal records and people that are famous because of bad decisions that got them front page news.
The younger generation think that is what they should do since that is what they see on TV and the internet. Divinecaroline.com state “Reality shows have become very popular and teens have begun to realize that you can become famous just by being a bad girl, teen mom, or a crazy party animal who likes to do nothing but drink and “smush,” like the cast members on Jersey Shore.” Shows like this are giving teens the wrong idea. Why should the cast be paid so much for setting a bad example? This country is supposed to be looked up to as a great clean country. With shows like this on air for the world to see it is a disgrace.
Many people believe the charities do a very good job “looking out” for those with disabilities bringing to the fore the need for help and support for any such person. Without the work the charities do those with disabilities would possibly be left alone with their problems to “fend for themselves” so the work the charities do is priceless for those that require such help. The number of people aware of the aids epidemic is extremely high, because of the work done by charities to bring it to the public eye. As an able bodied person think about all the relative freedom you possess when out about Town doing your shopping, would you be happy being forced to allow someone else to make the decision on which shops you may
Twenge states, “To many older people, it’s funny. But too many younger people the main consumers of the reality shows on, say, MTV it shapes their views of the world” (pg 7). Narcissism is shown often, and without hesitation on reality TV younger viewers are being conditioned by the depiction of narcissism. Slowly, the excess amount of narcissism seems normal. For instance, on “America’s Next Top Model” young viewers wish to be thin, tall, and overall a model, but go about it in the wrong ways.
Such devices are comparison and contrast, rhetorical questions and allusions. Downie uses comparison and contrast, in paragraph 2, when making the claim that rather than learning about or celebrating the life of those who made a big contribution to the world, persons engage more in the lives of celebrities. She draws the conclusion when comparing the lives of any one of the major contributors but mainly Mother Teresa’s life to the life of celebrities, it’s nonnegotiable and their work becomes mediocre. Downie also uses rhetorical questions purposely to boggle the minds of her readers to gain a more focused view on life and what it should be rather than what persons see it as. One main rhetorical question she asked was “what is environmental stewardship?” While analyzing her article, I found that she used a rhetorical question as a form of humor (what idiot would want love if that’s all they could look forward to?).
Unlike Robber Barons they saw charities as a way of offering good will to the community that they were located in. They behaved in a way that showed to the best of their ability they would work to build a community instead of taking the resources and preparing to leave. Not all wealthy people were able to succeed with what they believed. Andrew Carnegie believed that wealth is divided in three ways which is, the descendants receive it; it’s used to public purposes; or it’s taken for taxes. It is unfortunate that in many cases to get the wealthy to help, there may be a need to increase the tax burden of the wealthy upon death so as to not have that burden placed solely on the middle class wage
Manipulation of media is of course one of the main factors. Nowadays, we know all too well how easily it is for media corporations to support one political agenda or another by twisting facts and feeding false information. Consumerism, supported and viralized by media, also carries a message which tends to separate those who consume a certain kind of product from those who do not, stating that the former are happier than the latter. This exercises certain social pressure among consumerist individuals who may somehow see their social status affected and thus feel left out. As a result, the key for the survival of individuality lies in how conformist the people are ready and willing to become.
Ashley Tausaga Mrs. Davies English 1A 8 October 2009 Permanent Culture Most believe that the American dream is to be famous and extremely wealthy. Others believe the American dream is to succeed and to get an education. Most people in America take advantage of the opportunities given to them. They don’t realize the struggle that other countries face and the limited opportunities they receive. Richard Wright, Dinesh D’Souza, and Judith Cofer realize how different things are in America compared to their lifestyle and culture, and tell about how it impacted their lives.
Both companies are not real people so they shouldn’t have the right to say why there company is better that’s ridiculous. Without people knowing who is the better TV provider or better candidate all depends on what kind of advertisement that company puts out. So all the ads you see on TV will either make fun of the company or say how bad they are on what they produce or they will do. Big ways corporations get their ads out are on social media nowadays. With Facebook the top social media website you know companies are going to get their ads on there.
