Also, each ship arrives exactly six months after it leaves. The purpose of this POW is to figure out if we were on a ship leaving from New York, the number of ships we would meet along the way. When I first started this POW I found it very confusing, and I didn’t understand how to get started on it. I decided to re-write the important facts on my sheet of note paper. I wrote down that one ship leaves from New York and one ship leaves from San Francisco on the first of every month at 12:00 P.M.
Bryce Hospital was founded in Tuscaloosa in 1859 as the Alabama Insane Hospital with help from Dorothea Dix, the Alabama Medical Society, the Alabama legislature, and Governor Henry Collier. A law was enacted in 1852 addressing six major areas: state financial support, asylum governance, site selection, facility construction, superintendent selection, and patient selection. A major flaw in the law stated that funding was to come from state annual revenue for the first five years, but what was to happen after the fifth year was never addressed (Encyclopedia of Alabama). The hospital was governed by a board of trustees, which was established to help the superintendent. The ones who had the most influence lived in or near Tuscaloosa County.
During the Civil War, violent crime increased in New York City, and a police insurance fund was established in 1864 to guarantee financial security to the families of police officers killed or disabled in the line of duty. Between 1870 and 1894, New York's police department was restructured. In 1898, the department assimilated 18 smaller police agencies and later began to use plain clothes police officers for the first time. The department experienced a period of modernization from 1900 to 1920. Following World War I, the Great Depression, World War II, and civil unrest in the 1960's, the focus in 1970's was on rebuilding police-community relations.
In 1950, Chief Lloyd Layman introduced the use of water fog application as an indirect method of attack during a presentation called “Little Drops of Water” at the Fire Department Instructors Conference (FDIC) in Memphis, TN. His presentation that day changed the fire service and created a debate that has existed ever since. Fog nozzles were nothing new to the fire service. At that time, they had been around for more than 150 years, dating back to 1863 when Dr. John Oysten obtained the first US patent on a fog nozzle. However, Chief Layman’s presentation was very impressionable on the American fire service.
Computers, Technology and Criminal Justice Information Systems Unit 4 Project Sage M. Holt February 24, 2013 CJ216-01 Long before Uncle Bob even saw the lights of the police car in his rear view mirror, the officer that pulled him over may have already had an abundance of information about him. Some police cars are equipped with a device called an automatic license plate reader or ALPR. A license plate reader is a piece of equipment that is capable of capturing license plate information. Once the information is captured, it is run through a database automatically. Information the scan will return to the officer will include the vehicle owners name, the year the vehicle was made, the make and model, vehicle identification number (VIN), along with the expiration date of the license plate and any suspensions placed on the plate.
In February 1966, Nader delivered an indictment of the auto industry before Senator Ribicoff’s subcommittee. Congressional support continued to grow in regards to auto safety regulation. On September 9, 1966 President Johnson signed the National Traffic and Motor Vehicle Safety Act into law. This was a great accomplishment for Nader who championed for this law even after being attacked and investigated by General Motors. Nader sued GM and won for invasion of privacy and

Police History Diane Gerton CJA/214 April 07, 2014 Michael Daniels Police History Modern day policing owes its creation to the past. Success and unsuccessful ways of policing have changed the way things have been done from past to present. Policing started with officers walking their beats and getting to know the community, the people that officers were hired to protect and serve. With the invention of the automobile and telephones, it has made policing change their ways. Police cars have made it possible for officers to be able to respond to calls faster and also have made police departments expand where police patrol.
