Speech, not force, is often the best means of resolving a volatile situation as expeditiously as possible. Integrity a police officer faces constant temptation both inside and outside the department. Not a few criminals have tried to bribe their way out an arrest. Officers may also handle large amounts of cash at a drug bust before the actual amount has been counted in the evidence room. At the same time, many departments observe a "code of silence" in which officers protect corrupt co-workers even if they do not indulge in misconduct themselves.
In order to be able to maintain good rapport with citizens, and safe, efficient working with criminals, a police officer must be able to handle all situations with a degree of composure that will better ensure that everyone will come out of every situation alive and well. With a good ethical background using personal experiences and training, a police officer may be able to talk someone off a bridge, they may be able to convince a young gang member to turn himself in, or he may be able to squelch a violent man who is beating his wife. Without the ingrained good ethics and character mistakes can be made which could be harmful to a citizen, or to the reputation of the police department. When a reputation is harmed, then no citizen is safe. The police force will lose the respect of the community, and will not be as efficient in handling cases as they
Running head: INTERVIEW PROJECT 1 Interview Project Matthew Baxley Kaplan Univeristy CJ100: Eight Skills of the Effective Criminal Justice Student INTERVIEW PROJECT 2 I have always wondered what it takes to be an officer of the law. My father was a police officer in our home town of Atlanta but transferred to the Army shortly after I was born. I have had a sensitive spot for law enforcement and did my best to try and respect them the way I would as if my father was still an active police officer. Oddly enough as time goes on I find myself leaning back to this profession and have recently had the chance to come into contact with Deputy Sheriff Malcolm Murray and get a better sense of things from his own personal views and ideas about the law from his point of view. Deputy Murray is a large man with a very intimidating stature.
I understand that the three strikes law was put into place to keep big time offenders off of the street, but there are flaws in the system. A felony such as, may not warrant life in prison. I myself have a hard time justifying taking someone's life away for something so small. Although the line
Also Venkatesh said he would have liked to see the perspective of the police and why they didn’t do anything of the violence. Since he got in the wrong foot of some of the officers, he didn’t have good connections with them. Also not to offend and make it seem like he was just using Jt and community he didn’t ask some Straight- forward question that he would of wanted to ask. There were some limitations but Jt helped him through everything and meeting the right
This tend to let the criminal go loose which raises concerns among the society as they are living among with those dangerous criminal and that the police officers have no ways to identify them even if they are able to identify the criminal, they could not put the criminals behind bars. At first crime control model were intended to assist police in getting the criminal. However some police officer had abuse their power given to solve their case quickly which led to miscarriages of justice which can be seen in the previous case. There are also other examples where police have misuse their power that leads to the conviction of innocent society. Situation like this can be seen in cases like Guildford four, Birmingham six, Maguire seven and many more.
Instead of staying in a darkened room, the commanders should be training their officers on how to combat this action and help actual reduce the crimes not cover them up. They need to make sure that officers know the importance of CompStat and how it benefits their department. CompStat can be a great tool, but it must be implemented and used correctly and information cannot be falsified to give data that is wanted. If the information is correct than it can help us ensure that our police department are working to actually reduce crime not just to make their department look good. This information can be used for many different reasons and if individuals knew that police departments were doing everything in their power to actually reduce crimes some areas would not be so scary to live in or
Public returned the favor by rioting and a lot of people and cops getting killed. Fourth Principle, “the degree of co-operation of the public that can be secured diminishes proportionately to necessity of the use of physical force” instead of using the violent force to get co-operation of the public only use physical force only when it’s needed. Modern law enforcement doesn’t try use talking about it they usually use physical force when it’s not needed, this is where the disagreement form the public comes in. Fifth principle, “Police seek and preserve public favor not by catering to the public opinion but by constantly demonstrating absolute impartial serve to the law” the police are posed to serve the public equal because all men are equal one race that is the human race. Police don’t pull and arrest a man because of his race black, white etc... .
Stop and frisk policing constitutionally confers the civil rights and the American justice system. This practice made the people in the community feel like savages and more or the least degrading. The relationships with the community and the authority were not healthy and did not deter crime in the communities. Law should guide government and citizens behavioral in a morally good direction, rather than a bad direction. Police officers were permitted to briefly stop any individuals but only upon reasonable suspicion that he or she is committing a crime.
Police agencies do not want the focus of police to be a racial issue. As an attempt to counter these thoughts and issues against police agencies, agencies adopted less lethal force weapons such as the use of tasers and OC spray. In order to decrease the number of fatal shootings the go to less lethal weapon of choice is the taser. As used, it has shown that it to be very effective most of the time but in some cases where your opponent is on some type of drug or has a mental issue that the taser does not have a good effect of them and they can still preform while getting the shock. Same goes for the OC spray, some people can fight right through the pain and it have no effect on them what so ever.
