Summary Patagonia : Patagonia is a Ventura, California-based clothing company focusing on high-end outdoor clothing. The company is a member of several environmental movements. It was founded by Yvon Chouinard in 1972. They have a diverse mix of apparel targeted towards skiers, surfers, limbers, and others. Patagonia employs a flex-time policy, allowing employees to take time off to go surfing. And Patagonia is a major contributor to environmental groups. 1. Describe how Patagonia has integrated social responsibility throughout the entire organization and how it might affect functions such as purchasing, manufacturing and logistics. (Give examples) -Patagonia is trying to be responsible about social problems such as environmental issues. Patagonia donates 1% of total profits for environmental campaigns and makes environment-friendly products for customers and earth even though Patagonia spent more money for raw materials. Also, Patagonia makes their products using recycled products. -They made ‘Piton’ for rock climbers in the 1970s. However, this ‘Piton’ was not a good product for the environment because it damaged rock in the mountains. So, Chouinard invented other products instead of Piton. Chouinard is a rock climber, environmentalist, and outdoor businessman. He made new products using chalk. At first, nobody agreed with his opinion. However, finally, people started use chalk and help to protect the environment. -They make strong products that people can use for a long time. In the book “Let My People Go Surfing” by Chouinard, he said that one of the the philosophies behind his products is durability. He considered that as people use the same products for a long time, they would not throw away the products, and reducing the waste this way would protect the environment. 2.
