Can I live without the thyroid gland? I can live without the thyroid gland, but it is a life threatening if there is no supplementation to replace its functions. The following is explaining the functions of thyroid gland and how it is important to human body. The thyroid gland is a shield-shaped cartilage with two lobes connected by isthmus over the trachea, which locates in the front of the neck and below the larynx. The thyroid gland secretes 3 major hormones, thyroxin (T4), triiodothyronine (T3) and calcitonin. These thyroid hormones affect most of cells of the body. The thyroid gland plays an important role in regulating metabolism and calcium balance. The T4 and T3 hormones stimulate the production of proteins; utilize oxygen at equilibrium level in the bloodstream and control affect the growth in many functions in the body, such as brain and muscles. Calcitonin helps to regulate calcium homeostasis in bone and kidneys (Martini, Nath & Bartholomew, 2012, p.609-615). If I do not have the thyroid gland, it would lead me to hypothyroidism, which is the underproduction of the thyroid hormones T3 and T4. Robert (2013, website article) states that hypothyroidism leads an abnormal weight gain, muscle weakness, depression and tiredness. Therefore, the body could not produce hormones as fuel to supply cells to function. That is, less energy to cells and leads less physically and psychologically willingness to exercise the body and finally muscles are too weak to support body. Its prolonged effect of this vicious circulation would be developing chronic illnesses, such as heart diseases cause by high blood lipid level. Another effect of these hormones is also predominant for preborn child and child after born.
