* White community- Most of the people in Maycomb think that Tom's death just shows how stupid black people are and show excitement. They say that it shows black people have no patience or discipline and Tom deserved it. * Mr Underwood-. Mr. Underwood writes in the paper that Tom's death was "like the senseless slaughter of songbirds." Mr. Underwood's reaction shows that there is forward movement in the minds of some - towards racial tolerance and equality.
From the racial prejudice used against Tom Robinson, to the economical prejudice against the Cunningham family, To Kill a Mockingbird has shown how people in Maycomb look at people. This book truly shows how the people in Maycomb Alabama are prejudice towards each other. It is very devastating that people would ever treat people like this and be prejudice like they are in this
Prosecutor “You felt sorry for her? A white woman? You felt sorry for her?” (Lee,?) This quote is proving racial discrimination towards Tom Robinson. When Tom said that he felt sorry for Mayella it was wrong in their minds because he is an African American who should not feel bad for a white person whose class is higher.
So when The Great Depression hit America, along with everyone else, everybody felt the conditions made by the Depression. Clifford Burke, an African-American pensioner, stated, “The negro was born in depression. It didn’t mean too much to him… There was no such thing.” He would go on to say, “It [The Great Depression] only became official when it hit the white man.”(82). A few pages down Robert Langston, an African-American social worker and jazz musician, makes a similar statement when he says, “It was the Depression because no white and no blacks were working. The whites not working made it official.” (90).
What if the Africans/African Americans were the slave owners? Would it be wrong? It made some slave holders and their overseers brutal, it made other white people feel guilty and ashamed. Slavery was a moral sickness upon the society. Most slave owners were of white descent and for them to turn their back on their own kind is awfully inhumane, you could tell immediately that these people had no type of conviction or mercy within their own race.
If it was seen, people would say, why s he sittin with the colored folks? (Lee 163). To Kill A Mockingbird also shows discrimination against lawyers. Lawyers have always been deeply discriminated against. They are discriminated for what they believe, stand for, and everything that they represent.
The belief of stereotypes played into the lynchings a significant amount. The general fear of blacks rebelling was based on the stereotype that blacks commit more crimes than whites. As a result, whites lynched blacks as a sign of superiority and as a way of minimizing
How does Harper Lee use minor characters in To Kill A Mockingbird to explore some of the main concerns of the novel? 1) Harper Lee used Dolphous Raymond to explain how racism was at the time. Raymond could not be himself because people would judge him because he had a negro wife and children. 2) Harper Lee used Aunt Alexandra and Mrs. Dubose to explain how people were biased. Scout could not do anything without Aunt Alexandra and Mrs. Dubose criticizing what Scout was wearing, doing, and behaving.
Everyone knows this case should not have taken place. The Ewells are known for being selfish and rude as everyone knows. They enjoy the attention, they enjoy making a scene. They are clearly not educated; the kids only go school once every year, and the police gave up trying
“No, everybody’s gotta learn, nobody’s born knowin’. That Walter’s as smart as he can be, he just gets held back sometimes because he has to stay out and help his daddy. Nothin’s wrong with him. Naw, Jem, I think there’s just one kind of folks. Folks” (Lee 304).
