Atticus Speech “Our courts have their faults, as does any human institution, but in this country our courts are the great levelers, and in our courts all men are created equal.” “Gentlemen, we are living in times of racism, in times of poverty, in times of cruel judgement. But let me ask you gentlemen, how are negroes worse than caucasians? How does the color of your skin determine whether you deserve to live or not? Think about these questions to yourselves. Look past the skin color of not only Tom Robinson, not only those unfairly punished based on race, but all humans. Yes, some humans should be punished, based on their actions. No man, or woman, should be punished because they have a darker skin color than us. The color of your skin is not in control, but your actions are. Rage is the action that is determining the fate of this bright young man who’s only done good for this world. Think deeply about this man who only has served the public. Tom Robinson was constantly asking to help others, constantly trying to put a smile on people’s faces. His left hand is no longer capable of doing everyday tasks, because he was helping others by using the cotton gin. But you honorable gentlemen say he should be sentenced to death? What has he done to hurt any of you? He has three, beautiful, innocent young children, a wife, a happy family. But you want to rip them apart, beat them down, tear their souls apart.
