Effective Communication Misty Chambers CJA/304 May 3, 2012 Mark Coppes Effective Communication What is communication? Communication is defined as “An act or instance of transmitting…a verbal or written message (communication, 2009).”Communication is an absolute necessity for anyone in any field. To communicate effectively is where it gets confusing. Most people misconstrue communicating and effective communicating. A person who only communicates in his or her workplace will fail at their job and set poor examples for coworkers and incoming personnel. As for someone who communicates effectively, will go far in the job and might learn a thing or two. I, personally, never noticed any barriers until I got out of Tennessee and into the military. There I noticed that there are so many different types of people out there. I did not want to make a fool out of myself by trying too hard. I had to overcome a lot of barriers to become the person I am today. Those barriers include: language, cultural, and interpersonal barriers. A language barrier is the physical and nonphysical aspect of language. By the physical aspect is the language itself. Not everyone speaks fluent English that is one of the main physical barriers. A nonphysical barrier would be when the messenger sends the message, but some words mean another interpretation to the receiver. Cultural barriers include gender, age, sexuality, race, and social status. Interpersonal barriers are found in work settings. This could be where the employee lacks motivation or flat out refuses to cooperate. As the employer, they do not trust their employees nor has no known knowledge of nonverbal communication. All of these barriers have an impact in the criminal justice organization. The barriers could be positive but also could have a negative effect in the workplace. Criminal justice organization is no different than working at a department store. Some strategies that could be implemented to overcome communication barriers would be to give your undivided attention to the person presenting the message. Another strategy would be to not be so close minded about everything and everyone. We are all different and perception is reality to most. Another strategy would be to think before you act. If you have to practice in front of a mirror before putting yourself out there, then by all means, do it! If people would just stop and think about what they are going to say and how they present themselves and their case then everyone’s communication skills would
