Bryan Texas!!! What Most People Want To Know About Bryan Texas!!! Bryan has gotten bigger in population but not in land wise. Bryan is exactly 86 miles East from Austin Texas. The population in Bryan Texas is 76,524. There are only seven different zip codes in Bryan Texas (77801, 77802, 77803, 77805, 77806, 77807, and 77808). Bryan is only 43.3 square miles (112.1 km²). Bryan is located South East Central Texas. Bryan is named after William Joel Bryan the nephew of Stephen F. Austin. Bryan became a town of Texas in 1821. 1820 Stephen F. Austin and his colony settled here in Bryan. 1859 Houston and Texas Central Railroad were built around the area. There is 47% Hispanics, 36% Whites, 13% Blacks, 4% any other races. Lake Bryan also has a bar off to the side of it. Lake Bryan is actually really pretty humongous and pretty big. Lake Bryan has been stocked with species of fish intended to improve the utility of the reservoir for recreational fishing. On Aug. 19, 1867, the first train steamed into Bryan amidst a gala celebration. Bryan residents celebrated, Millican residents faced tremendous hardship. Yellow fever swept through community only few weeks after railroad came to Bryan, and much of the town's population shifted to the new county seat. By 1870, Bryan had replaced Millican and Boonville as Brazos County's center of commerce. Bryan residents voted in 1867 to incorporate, the town was not formally incorporated until an act of the Texas Legislature in 1871. Non-official organizations aroused in the early 1870s to promote agriculture, trade, and also cultural opportunities. Among them were: The Central Texas Agricultural, and Mechanical Association, chartered for the purpose of holding at least one county fair each year; the Bryan Real Estate, Building, and Joint Stock Association of Bryan; The Bryan Bridge Company, established to encourage trade by getting a bridge built across the Navasota River on a road to Madisonville; and the Library…show more content…
Bryan's first newspaper, Brazos Pilot, began the weekly publication in 1876. It was joined by the Bryan Weekly Eagle in 1889. In 1910, Bryan's first daily paper, the Bryan Eagle, had success both weeklies. The city's North Side historically has been home to Bryan's African-American community. Newly freed African-Americans settled in an area around Orleans and Preston streets known as "Freed man’s town," African-American businesses and professional offices traditionally operated at the northern end of Main and Bryan streets. Today Martin Luther King Jr. corridor serves as Bryan's largest African-American neighborhood, religious and residential structures along its entire length. The Bryan Air Base was activated in 1942, then deactivated in 1945, and then reactivated in 1951. In the 1940s, the base served as a temporary campus for Texas A&M College freshmen. A hospital established on the base boasted an obstetrics ward. The air base was phased out in 1959, and in 1962, the property became home to the Texas A&M Research
