Book-review White Fang Background of Jack London’s writing plan The Call of the Wild is about a dog named Buck goes through a lot of hardships and learns to adapt to an entirely new way of life. The main conflict in The Call of the Wild is the struggle between civilization and the wild. Buck gradually transforms from a domesticated dog to a wild one. After receiving all the praise, Jack London became very enthusiastic about a new idea for a book that would be a "companion" to The Call of the Wild. "I'm going to reverse the process" he wrote to his publisher. ("Instead of the devolution of de-civilization of a dog, I'm going to give the evolution, the civilization of a dog - development of domesticity, faithfulness; love morality and all the amenities and virtues. With The Call of the Wild as a "forerunner,") he declared the new book should "be a hit." Surely, it is a hit! Book-review The story happened during the Gold Rush period in North America. White fang was born in wilderness and was the only one of the five cubs that survived a famine. After his father was killed by a lynx, he followed his mother she-wolf and was domesticated by his first Indian master Grey Beaver. In the Indian tribe, he was constantly bullied by Lip-lip, whom he later killed. Later Grey Beaver was tricked into selling White Fang to Beauty Smith, who abused him and trained him to be a ferocious fighter. In a fight with a bulldog, he was badly injured and nearly suffocated when he was saved by Scott. Scott awakened his need to love and to be loved with care and patience.
