Blood Diamond- Summary The film, “Blood Diamond”, starring Leonardo DiCaprio is set in Sierra Leone during Civil War in 1999. The film examines a country torn apart by war. The movie begins when Solomon Vandy is captured by Revolutionary United Front Rebels. Soon after the capture, Soloman’s son, Dia is also captured and forced into the rebel army. Solomon finds a rare and very valuable diamond while he is a slave in one of the diamond fields. Solomon is able to hide the diamond before he is captured by government troops and imprisioned. This is where Danny Archer (Leonardo DiCaprio) learns of the hidden diamond and joins forces with Solomon. On their journey Danny and Solomon enlist in the help of an American journalist, Maddy to help them get across borders. Solomon finds his son and Danny is critically injured during their escape out of the country. Danny dies and Solomon uses the diamond to give his family safety and reunification. Maddy publishes the story of Blood Diamonds and exposes the “hidden” culprits of the conflict. This movie is a fascinating example of how global economic, political and social problems affect and contribute to inequality. There are several “Economic Traps of the Bottom Billion” portrayed in the movie. The first and possibly the most obvious is the “Conflict Trap”. The area of Sierra Leone is suffering from civil war and ongoing conflict. This conflict causes many people in the region to suffer. Innocent men, women and children are routinely captured, tortured, killed or forced to work or fight for one or the other sides of conflict. This type of servitude causes already vulnerable individuals and families to be even more vulnerable. Genocide and rape was very common in the movie, this is very similar to the situation in Darfur which was used as an example of the “Conflict Trap” in class. Another type of trap is the “Natural
