1.3: Depression, delirium and age related memory impairment could be mistaken for dementia as they all manifest with similar symptoms. Depression coupled with age related memory impairment looks the same as dementia to the untrained eye. The difference is that depression delirium responds to treatment with anti depressants. Once you get on top of the depression you can put age related memory loss into perspective. If it is genuine dementia it won't get better.
What are the cognitive mechanisms and the strategic functions of ‘Selective Optimization with Compensation? (Baltes & Baltes, 1990) What is selective optimization with compensation? , in this essay that is what I aim to resolve and give detail to. Although there are many variables that fall under this category, one of the methods employed by psychologists in ‘successful aging’ (Baltes & Baltes, 1990) is to adjust to physical and intellectual defects when relating to growing older. It entails accentuates and re enforces those capabilities that are initially impacted only slightly by the aging process (optimization) and generates new ways of sustaining functions in those aspects that are greatly impacted (compensation).
Most of the research supports a need for further, larger research studies because of the effectiveness, relative low cost and ease of aromatherapy. Through the review of research articles and journals, I intend to present the benefits and effectiveness of using aromatherapy in reducing agitation and improving cognitive function in dementia patients. DEMENTIA Dementia is a broad term used to describe many different diseases, such as Alzheimer’s and vascular dementia, which are the result of destroyed brain tissue (Lerner, 2012). This destruction often leads to a decline in cognitive function that leads to issues with physical, social and occupational functioning. Dementia can affect adults of all ages and can often be confused with delirium.

3) Other conditions such as depression and delirium both have similar symptoms as dementia. Memory loss can just be a result of ageing, however it is also a symptom of dementia. Understand key features of the theoretical models of dementia. 2.1) The medical model of dementia focuses on the dementia itself. For example it focuses on which type of dementia it is and how it can be treated.
