The impression that source one gives is that Bevan forced the National Health Service on unwilling medical professionals in 1948. Details from the source show this impression through representational techniques such as the size of ‘Matron Bevan’ compared to the doctors. The large size of Bevan indicates directly to the strength of his power and position, in contrast to the small size of the doctors. This shows that the doctors had no chance of standing up to Bevan and had to do as he said. The source details illustrate the doctor’s opposition the NHS through the sick faces and general unhappiness of the cartoon doctors as they line up to take their ‘medicine’ from the NHS labelled pot.
The source details show the doctors were against the NHS through the sick faces of the doctors as they line up to take their medicine from the pot which has the words NHS written on it. The Doctors say “It still tastes awful” this quote shows the doctors’ are not willing to accept that the NHS will be formed as they are forcefully swallowing the medicine we can suggest that the taste of the medicine wasn’t very nice showing that the NHS was something that was unfair to the doctors and it shows that the doctors aren’t very happy with the introduction of the NHS as it will affect the doctors more than the public in terms of working hours and their wages. Source two has the same impression as source one; doctors were forced to accept the National Health Service by Bevan. Details from this source 2 show this through these quotes, “There will be a considerable degree of ratting” This means that the doctors will ultimately give up the fight because Bevan is too powerful to stand up to and they have no chance in stopping the introduction of the NHS. Also “Unfortunately, the economic sanctions which Bevan can draw against us are grim” This quotation also shows how the doctors’ were unhappy with the NHS scheme.
Bromden, uncomfortable with McMurphy’s deceit, refuses to accept the five dollars that McMurphy offers him later. McMurphy asks why all of a sudden everyone acts like he is a traitor, and Bromden tells him it is because he is always winning things. Ratched orders that everyone who went on the fishing trip be cleansed because of the company they kept. George has a phobia regarding cleanliness and begs the aides not to spray him with their smelly salve.
Many of the injured individuals were injured by grenades, gaseous agents, bombs, or bullets. These weapons lead to missing limbs, broken bones, and the nurses seen blood every day. Hospitals were developed, medicines were created, surgical procedures, and even the ambulance all were developed during World War One. The individuals hurt severely had to have immediate care or they would die, and most of those hurt eventually died. In the field of medicine, physicians were familiar with Louis Pasteur’s germ theory and knew of Joseph Lister’s discoveries in the fields of bacteriology and antisepsis.
Because of the soldier’s bad habits, the person who slept on the bottom bunk would wake up in the morning covered in the others pee, which became extremely unhealthy. Himmelstoss used his power to humiliate these boys. Another person who abused his power in wartime was the doctor at Paul and Albert’s hospital. He abused his position to perform extremely debatable operations on patients that had little say in their own health. He crippled many patients in his search to find a cure for people with flat feet.
Description The critical incident took place on a surgical ward whilst I was on placement. It was a negative experience which caused me to pause and reflect on ensuring that everything I do in practice is in the best interest of the patient (NMC 2008). It also made me consider the possible negative implications for patients due to poor practice and behaviour of healthcare professionals (Alphonso 2007). After spending some time in critical care following an appendicectomy, a 72 year old male patient who will be known as Mr. Smith was escorted by a nurse, to the surgical ward at approximately 1700 hours. My mentor asked if I would take handover from the nurse, who I will call nurse A, take Mr Smith’s observations and admit him to the ward.
On Washing Hands Response The first time reading On Washing Hands, I really didn’t understand what point Gawande was trying to get across. Gawande was listing a bunch of deadly diseases, and I was wondering how they pertained to washing your hands. As you read further, in the short story, the author mentions two million Americans acquire an infection while they are in the hospital and ninety thousand die of that infection (Gawande 343). The main cause of this is people not washing their hands. It took me a while to piece together all the information.
The pharmacy was so busy that day and short staffed, which led to a preventable fatal error that changed Eric’s whole life in a matter of seconds. The pharmacist was charged for reckless homicide and involuntary manslaughter in the death of little Emily, but the technician did not face any criminal charges (Institute for Safe Medication Practices, 2009). It is important to know that medication errors can happen in any health care setting; however, they are preventable. According to the Institute of Medicine: Shaping the future for health. (1999), approximately 1.5 million people are harmed each year, costing health care facilities at least $3.5 billion in medical expenses.
War Communism was radical and involved the militarisation of Labour which was disliked by the people and made people focus purely on the needs of the war. This contrasts greatly with the First World War (WW1) because the Tsar didn’t militarise Labour completely and so the demand for supplies in WW1 couldn’t be met by the factories. Starvation was nothing new in Russia and during WW1 the supplies couldn’t reach the troops on the front line and so many soldiers had little to eat. With War Communism the majority of the food would be taken from a household to feed an army and the result was that Russians starved, this time the household starved and there was little incentive to grow more. War Communism was introduced as the focus of Lenin was on the military and getting supplies to the soldiers of Russia quickly.
