According to the Tribune, the department issued Sig Sauer 40-caliber is three times the weight of the department issued Taser gun. So how does one get it confused? (Oakland Tribune 2009) Whether he intended to pull his Taser gun instead of his Sig Sauer .40 caliber pistol boils down to whether he was even carrying a Taser gun in the first place. The family began to walk out the court when they anticipated a probation sentence but Judge Perry continued that a young man died, and that prison was appropriate. He then sentenced Mehserle to the low term of 2 years, with 146 days of in custody.(Wikipedia) What I have picked up through this research is that the technology of the Taser gun still has some bugs to work out. I would definitely suggest longer training in the use of the Taser gun. I believe the BART police department only required 6 hours of training prior to use of the gun. I feel that law enforcement do as much as they can to make sure that every decision they make in the community is ethically sound. It is just that from time to time, cases like the one that happen on New Year’s Eve, 2009 is a reminder that society is constantly evolving and to be a productive part of the society, law enforcements have to keep one finger on its pulse and adapt accordingly.
