Aurelia Aurita The Aurelia Aurita, also known as the Moon Jellyfish, are recognized for their delicate and exquisite coloration, often in patterns of spots and streaks. They belong to a group of very similar species of jellyfish in the Aurelia species and they are almost impossible to distinguish them from each other without testing their genetic material. Moon jellyfish are typically found close to the shore, where their preferred temperatures range from 9 °C to 19 °C; however, these jellyfish can be found in freezing cold waters as well and in tropical regions where the temperature exceeds 30°C. Their behavior depend on a number of external conditions, particularly, the food they consume. According to a marine biology website, their “Swimming mostly functions to keep the animal near the surface of the water rather than to make progress through the water.” This for instance, allows the tentacles of the jellyfish to expand over the largest possible area, in order to aid its ability to catch food. This process occurs, mostly because of their coronal muscles, which allow the jellyfish to pulsate in order to make movements in the sea. Their rhopalial centers, control these pulsation and as the oxygen rate of the water goes down, the respiratory rate of the moon jellyfish decrease. Because they lack the entire essential respiratory organ of other fish in the sea, the jellyfish breathe by diffusing oxygen from the surrounding water through its thin membranes. As a result, well-oxygenated water enters the gastro vascular cavity and low oxygenated water is expelled in this manner. Because the moon jellyfish are carnivorous and feed on zooplankton, their primary foods include small plankton organisms such as mollusks, crustaceans, tunicate larvae, copepods, rotifers, nematodes, young polychaetes, protozoans, diatoms and eggs.
