The purpose of this paper is to outline the findings of the murderers of Ashley Smith and bring her killers to face justice. In this report, I will reflect on how the case was investigated and how I feel that it was handled. I will give a brief synopsis and then advise on the findings. On November3, 2000 two truck drivers found the body of Ashley Nicole Smith, apparently stabbed to death, in a wooded area behind a Pizza Hut in Howard County, Maryland. To see if any information from anyone else would be brought forward, a tip line was established and implemented with an eight thousand dollar reward. Mrs. Smith was aware of Ashley’s current boyfriend who was supposedly a boy named Jason Phelps who lived in the area. She told the police that Ashley had dated quite a few fellows since they had lived there. There was a tap put on Mrs. Smith’s phone to record all of the incoming calls. I think that in this case it is important to understand that during a murder investigation, time is of the essence and it is key to work smarter not harder. I think that in this situation, that detectives handled the case very efficiently and effectively to get the murder solved. I think that it is imperative to be patient during times like this and remember that you have to really try and pull information out of people. I thought it was interesting that no one came forward quicker especially with their being a reward being offered. I think that the case was handled nicely and though it took a while, it is imperative that again one works harder not smarter when dealing with these sensitive
