Immigration One of the most controversial political and economical issues facing the United States today is immigration. It is constantly in the news being debated, and asking the question whether it is a morally sound law for the country. The rules against illegal immigrants coming into the United States should be kept; however, the new law in Arizona goes too far. People should oppose the Arizona immigration law because it is unfair to people who came to the U.S. for a better life. The governor signed a law that police can arrest anyone they suspected to be an immigrant. Making Hispanic people carry around their citizenship papers at all times is an invasion of their privacy. An article in the Seattle Times, talks of how immigration is a problem, but one that should not be resolved by checking documentation of citizenship. If a cop suspects one to be illegal by race or committal of an action, he can then ask for proof of identity. This may lead to dangerous behaviors that will harm more people then it will help. It is inevitable that this law will lead to racial profiling, how can it not? “Concerns that overburdened law enforcement may be tempted to rely on skin color to determine whether to ask for a green card, driver's license or other proof of citizenship are not misplaced” (www.seattletimes.com). Hispanic-Americans will take the brunt force of the law as they are often quickly judged to be here illegally. This could create uproar from many legal systems because of the blatant racism that is being exercised. The article discusses how this behavior leads to racial profiling. Racial profiling causes discrimination and makes generalizations about the way that certain people are expected to act based on the actions of a few. It also occurred in history, when the Japanese bombed Pearl Harbor and all Japanese-Americans were put into internment camps. I never took the time to really examine each side’s viewpoint. When I started writing this assignment I went in thinking it was a law that should be enacted in all states. However, after doing research for articles; my opinion shifted the other way. I grew up in an area of Washington that is predominately agriculture. Thus, there was a high immigrant population in the work force; I felt as though they were stealing jobs from us and I did not want them here. However, after doing research I learned how valuable they are to our economy. If we did not have their employment our nation’s economic troubles would be even worse and a lot of the farmers would not be able to produce foods. Also, I think this assignment opened my eyes and made me think about when my ancestors immigrated to the U.S. We often think the immigrants are not Americans they do not belong here, but they just want the fresh start that all our families once strived for and attained.
