Racism and discrimination is not accepted in mainstream society. However, SB 1070 contradicts this belief of equal tolerance. This type of law opens the door for racial profiling. It is empowering law enforcement officers to practice a form of racial profiling. As stated by Kristina M. Campbell, “It was heavily criticized as a law whose enforcement would rely on racial profiling of Latinos and other racial minorities and that would require anyone to produce proof of citizenship to law enforcement officers on demand.”(Campbell 1) SB 1070 is visibly targeting immigrants from Mexico.
Implementing laws to reduce the number of immigrants entering the United States illegally that lead to racial profiling has caused many controversial issues and arguments among people. For example, on April 23,2010 Arizona Governor, Jan Brewer, signed S.B. 1070 into law. That would prevent some immigrants from entering the country illegally. The law requires Arizona police officers to question any one they reasonably suspect of being an illegal alien.
Ban the Arizona Immigration Law The law I propose is to have the Arizona Immigration Law banned and repelled. Illegal immigrants come to the United States for the good life and start fresh, but thinking about it more and more illegal immigrants are going to fill the United States without even knowing the laws or language, which is why we need to ban the Arizona Law. This law is needed because it subjects plenty of ethnic groups and races to public discrimination and racism, which violates the rights of citizens (Americanized citizens). Like how the schools will lose state funding if they offer any courses that "promote resentment of a particular race or class of people or is designed primarily for students of a particular ethnic group
In Arizona they tried immigration enforcement. Other individual acts of discrimination could be when the criminal has already been detained and is already in handcuffs as well. There is always one officer that ruins the reputation of a department or agency. The best way to handle this is confront the situation to the leader of the investigation or talk to the current supervisor. Putting a stop to this behavior will not just help the department but correct any kind of other bad behavior
Craig Mattox Prof. Panther-Yates ENG 101 Sec. 35013 Argument Essay 12 December 2012 The Case of Amnesty Everyone wants the opportunity at living the American Dream, even those from other countries, which is causing many to illegally immigrate to the United States. Unfortunately, the new Arizona Senate Bill 1070 is causing a lot of controversy because it is granting police officers the right to arrest anyone who they suspect is here in our country illegally. According to Governor Jan Brewer’s comment in Randal C. Archibold’s article, “Arizona Enacts Stringent Law on Immigration”, “we have to trust our law enforcement” (Archibold 1). Although Governor Jan Brewer in the article “Arizona Enacts Stringent Law on Immigration,” has a good point about the importance or working to solve our immigration crisis; however, this crisis does not mean that the police should be given the power to detain anyone suspected of being in the country illegally.
Federalism Proposition 187 was a controversial measure in California in 1994. Focusing on illegal immigration, California was looking to fix the large influx of illegal immigrants in the state. Due to the initiative process in California, Proposition 187 was placed on the ballot for consideration of the voters. This Proposition had a numerous step plan in order to achieve the goal of fixing the large illegal immigrant population. Proposition 187 called for the denial of health, education, and social services to those people who are not registered citizens of the United States, or to those who are not legal immigrants.
Isn’t the federal law in charge of immigration? Why must our local officials then deal with immigration issues? We are creating a vicious circle of hate, what guarantees the citizens that police officials will not violate or take advantage of the power that they have been given? This new law is “giving police officers a green light to harass anyone who looks or sounds foreign” explained Alessandra Soler Meetze, executive director of the American Civil Liberties Union of Arizona. The question again arises, how will the officer detect these illegal immigrants?
Just this past year a controversial law SB1070 was signed by Arizona’s governor, were local police have the power to stop anyone on reasonable suspicion that is an illegal immigrant. They have the right to arrest them if they don’t have any documentation such as a driver’s license, work permit, or resident card that shows legal status. The biggest objection of this law is racial profiling and how police can just arrest anyone by race or culture. Arizona population for Illegal’s is an estimate amount of a half a million people. The estimate of people could have been around for years since youth or with in the
The department of justise is trying to ban racial profiling. There are laws and regulations but people do break them just like other laws. Therefore we cannot generalize for the entire population and say that racial profiling excists and by tighting up the security more racial profiling is occuring. Overall, although peoples privacies and rights are being touched by this enforced system, the government is only trying to protect us. Works Cited Baker, Nancy V. "National Security Versus Civil Liberties."
1070 into law. The controversial measure requires Arizona police officers to question anyone they reasonably suspect of being an illegal alien as to their immigration status, and to detain them if they cannot provide proof of their status. Several lawsuits have been filed challenging S.B. 1070, and many groups and government entities have put boycotts in place until Arizona repeals the law. As one can see, the plan on cracking down and busting more illegal immigrants is very
