While Rome did not police nearly the entirety of Earth as America does, in both cases the resources required for such a policy have drained the economy, and places military spending ahead of anything else. Towards the end of the Western Roman Empire, taxation became extremely high as the government needed more and more money to support its military in the form of supplies and payments for mercenaries. The case today with America is no different, our country spends more money on military than anything else, so much so that we have fallen hard in other important areas, especially education. In order to fund its military endeavors, the American government has borrowed absurd amounts of money from other countries and likely wealthy citizens, to the point that we are trillions of dollars in debt. In both cases this focus on military spending has led to a lack of concern for problems effecting the people living within the borders of America and Ancient Rome, and most likely this lessening of importance in regard to domestic affairs will lead to protesting, and possibly
The Dirty Little Secret: Poverty In America Jane A. Easter The current reality in the United States of America is that the level of disparity between classes is growing and not in a good way. The small portion of the rich are getting richer and the number of poor is increasing creating a larger gap between the previous middle class and the lower class. The other reality is that it is a “don’t ask, don’t tell” society. Though studies, census data and other overwhelming proof is all around us, it is one of the least talked about issues. The classes by race and gender continue to have disparate realities across the country.
According to an article in Slate On, the poor and low income people in our society are more overweight than the wealthy. This psychological behavior transcends to other cultures as well, telling me that people don’t really want equality but superiority. Regardless of the parts of the world you are from, someone always wants to feel superior to someone else. Though Americans did inherit the “wanting more” trait from the frontier opportunities, there were an influx of other nationalities flocking to America for the same opportunities (82). Likewise, they too have adopted the “hunger for more” mentality because they are financially able to adopt the psychological want.
It is clear that many of them work not because they are hard working by nature but because they have bills that are more than what they make, so many are bound to do more than two jobs just to meet up, and this will eventually goes to statistics as hard working but it is not, it is working to make ends meet. Also when it comes to limited/extended family I believe he is inaccurate because Americans now value extended family more than before, where family was
Changing Attitudes The American economy was stronger than ever. Some major changes began to take place in the American population. • Many Americans were not satisfied with their old ways of life. They wanted something better. And many people were earning enough money to look for a better life.
The taxpayers pay for these programs. As the population and the need for these benefits increase, the taxpayers pay increasingly more money. This does not help the economy. It is not fair for American citizens to have to increasingly pay more money to help support the illegal immigrants while struggling to support themselves and their own
There is less opportunity of jobs than before. If immigrants become citizens it would mean more people looking for jobs. Despite the improving economy, we still have millions of citizens out of work. Whether it's lack of skills or lack of opportunities, many of those citizens will be forced to take the low-paying unskilled jobs. If you pump in millions of new workers seeking jobs, it decreases the amount of work available.
These businesses were so large and employed so many people but with that being done, it was very difficult for a mass of workers to come together and fight for higher wages and better social benefits. Nowadays, big manufactures are not easily achievable when it comes to ordinary citizens trying to start one, but that is because the mass of Americans are shut out. Not being able to inherent the means of manufacture, us citizens are compelled into making a living by
Krystal Brea ISS1120 11:15 Inequality Recently America is economically becoming more unequal and a lot of people aren’t happy about it. Many people believe that inequality is necessary in order to reward success, hard work and entrepreneurship but consider that is has been taken to the extreme. Some are blaming tax policies for being unfair and believe today’s inequality has been taken to such an extent that it has become a sign of the government abandoning the idea of equal opportunities. With these things in mind, I would have to say that inequality is necessary to a certain extent. We cannot all be equal; as this will stop economy growth.
The United States had to start taking a closer look at who is entering the U.S. Anti-foreignism started to have a high birthrate and it scared the American people. They blamed the immigrants for degradation of urban governments. Socialism, communism, and anarchism were all associated with immigrants. Immigrants worked for cheap labor making it easier to find workers for difficult jobs such as factories and field crops. The Progressives had no unified movement and were very significant.
