I -Search Paper I can’t believe this happened to me. I never would have imagined anything like this. You’re walking home from a late night movie. Friends offer to drive you home, but you say you’ll be fine. You think you’re safe, and that stuff in the movies or on television can’t happen to you. And then something does. You’re pulled into an alley, and raped. Your life is changed and turned around in just a matter of minutes. I chose the topic of rape because I have heard that some scientist and normal citizens believe that men are biologically inclined to rape. I can’t see how this is true. There is much faulty science behind claims that men are biologically inclined to rape. “Telling us that it [rape] is natural tells us nothing except that it is found in nature” (Alcock 101). Rape is the act of sexual abuse that happens when a female refuses sexual intercourse with a male and he forces it upon her. Anyone can be raped at anytime. If a man has respect for women he is less likely to rape. If a child grows up in a torn or abusive home they are more likely to rape because of built up anger or hatred. Rape happens at any age. Rape is most of the time committed by a family member or acquaintance, than a stranger (Young 27). In the 1970s rape was widely seen as a sexual act of uncontrollable lust, not an act of violence. Critical to the concept of rape was the concept of women's "chastity." In traditional rape ideology, an "unchaste" (sexually experienced) woman lacked credibility and/or must have "wanted it" or consented. Only white women could be "chaste"; the law presumed that Black and probably other women of color were "unchaste." The historical treatment of rape charges often stemmed from men's extreme distrust of women when the alleged perpetrator was white (Wriggins). According to Encyclopedia Britannica Rape is the act of sexual intercourse with an individual without his or her consent, through force or the threat of force. In many jurisdictions, the crime of rape has been subsumed under that of sexual assault, which also encompasses acts that fall short of intercourse. Rape was long considered to be caused by unbridled sexual desire, but it is now understood as a pathological assertion of power over a victim (“Rape”). Rape is a decision. It makes People feel strong and powerful over the victim.(“Rape Cannot”). All men are potential rapists is true but women can rape also so how is it that men are biologically designed to rape.
